3 Bombers on 1 Carrier !!!

Postby - Tobias - » Wed May 06, 2009 8:58 pm

This occurred in a "solo" game versus CPUs.

1. Toward the end of a game I noticed that an enemy city was targeted, but I didn't see any bombers in the air headed there. I looked at the orders and traced the targeting back to a carrier that was only showing fighter status. Hmm. That's odd.
2. Still more odd, the carrier itself gave me only naval/srbm command options, as if it were a bomber. At this point it seemed the carrier itself was in srbm mode, but was not moving to target.
3. I selected naval command. This removed the targeting highlight on the city and returned the carrier command menu to normal, from which I selected bomber. Two bombers were shown, so I off-loaded one.
4. Believe it or not, after off-loading the first bomber, there were two still on the carrier!
5. I targeted the first off-loaded bomber, and then a second off-loaded bomber, and they both completed their bomb runs. One on the original city (Macapa, SA) and one on another city.
6. I off-loaded the third bomber in naval mode, and after it was in flight, I targeted it on Macapa. Well, the bomber just froze in mid-air. I switched back and forth between naval and srbm (by targeting Macapa), and each time I selected srbm the bomber froze. Finally I targeted a different city and the nuke landed successfully.
7. So, at one point, I had three loaded bombers on the same carrier it seems.
8. I do not know how this situation was created.

I thought of a recording, but didn't think it was possible in a solo game. The idea of a screenshot never occurred to me, but I'm not sure what any single screenshot would have shown. It did happen though, and I've tried to document it as meticulously as possible. I don't know what caused it.

What about reproducing it?

Did you happen to be in the seam of the map, with your carrier?

In thinking about this further, I am wondering if the "Land Bomber on Carrier" code captured both an empty returning bomber and a loaded (targeted) bomber at the same co-ordinates at the same time? Dunno, but it happened.

My carrier was off west africa.

maybe a rare race condition where 2 bombers land in the same game tick on the carrier.
steps to reproduce: perfectly stack a bunch of bombers and try to land them.

Rus|Mike seems to describe it best: One of the bombers must have already been flying (and targeted on Macapa), but somehow got stuck in (not on) the carrier!

Last thought on this: a screenshot of the commands showing the highlighted (targeted) city only connected to a carrier showing just fighters might have been helpful. Admittedly I did not have the presence of mind to think of this then, and by the time I recognized the full extent of the oddity (and thought of a recording possibility), that particular instant had come and gone.

Just reporting an FYI.

Did the fuel limit circle appear when you had selected the carrier?

An interesting question. Honestly, I don't know, but I think not. Since I was focused on the naval/srbm menu abberation, I can't say for sure. If it did, I did not see it.

I still think it was a stuck bomber right over the carrier. It could be that the fuel range circle was too big to be visible on your zoom level.

Well I'm not going to insist that the bomber was "in" the carrier, because I really don't know the limitations/possibilities of the code. What I do know, however, was that there was no visible bomber "on" the carrier (that showed fighter status); and that the bombers behaved as if they were in the carrier (by being off-loaded). The situation occurred, exactly as described.
