Ye Olde Med Trick

Postby Rogviler » Wed Jun 13, 2007 10:44 am

This just struck me as funny, so I thought I'd post it...

I was just spectating a game between three players, one DEMO, one that seemed like a newer player, and then this guy...

He had subs going to both the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico. One of the spectators said something like "Hey, don't cheat, sending subs to Italy is cheating!"

Well, it was probably the first time ever, but the guy actually tried to call them back, but of course unless you know the trick you can't just click anywhere and have them go back out. So he tried with futility to wrench them free, trying to send them here, then there...

Unfortunately Russia was both the DEMO player (so he didn't know you could just nuke near the tip of Italy and be done with it), and he had also left the game by the time... Our "Honest Abe" finally gave up and decided just to launch.

None of those nukes hit their target, which just goes to show that just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean it's the best strategy.

The whole game was weird though, large swatches of it were played at 20x speed... I get the feeling the two newer players weren't as up on the finer points of not getting creamed by someone with no tactics, so it was painful to watch the subs that red had sent to the Gulf of Mexico. They were parked right next to a radar when they surfaced, with an airbase not to much farther away. But all the subs survived their launch and beyond because it was all played at 20x.

Red won. Boo.

Yeah, it's amazing how bloody widespread the thing is by now. I played a game against a demo player yesterday (at his request since no other players showed up or stayed long enough for the game to fill). And he also moved to the med, apparently not knowing it was a bug (according to him, he started playing a week ago).

However, considering he sent only one, maybe two, subs there and used them one at a time to try to take out a radar and a silo (it was Russia (me) Vs Asia), it wasn't very effective.

In fact, I don't even know what's the point of sending subs to the med, in 9 out of 10 cases they won't even do anything worthwhile.

Simply to hit Cairo effectively...but you can do that from anywhere so i guess not so effective :) PUNK did the same to me, think he got Cairo, still didn't help him.

Point is that you're now within radar range of Africa and Europe. It's usually a bad idea to launch subs within one enemy's radar range unless they're backed up. But launching from radar range of two? It would be swarmed before the first nuke takes off.

Only in a 1v1. In my tournament round 3 game Homeowner and Zjoere were EU and Russia and i knew EU would be too busy to do anything about my 12 subs all launching next to his coast well within radar range.

Its bugging like crazy, not only did I see a few of my ships sail around inside of NA instead of going South, my allies ships just materalized in the exact middle of Brazil out of nowhere 0_o.

Which is why I said the "unless they're backed up" part. You can pull it off, but only if the other guys are busy elsewhere or otherwise distracted, or your subs are well protected.
