I just spec'd a most interesting 6-way affair. It was a 3v3 with Variable Unit Counts and defections off (very important to note
Defcons 5-2
NA had its 10 silos scattered all over the place, no apparent pattern. SA had all its silos in the mainland, fairly compact. I can't remember how Asia was set up (Asia dropped out early in the game, apparently the result of connection problems, but never returned); can't remember when). Africa had silos grouped in three bunches about mid-continent, Europe had silos about mid-continent in a tight pattern as well (with the pop/city settings it was probably as tight as you could get). Can't remember all of NA/SA's naval placement. I think NA had a couple of mixed 6-ship fleets (one fleet had 2 BBs, 2 CVs, and 2 subs, and the other was a mix of CVs and BBs) in the Atlantic and the rest in the Pacific. Europe set up shop in the Atlantic, with a group of four carriers heading into the Arctic. Africa also set up naval forces in the southern Atlantic with some subs and a few ships in the Indian. Russia was largely set up in the Pacific, but I think they had some ships in the Arctic as well.
Europe launched bombers at Defcon 2 heading for NA. Africa started launching a mass of bombers at Defcon 3 to handle naval cleanup detail, and I think Russia started launching bombers at Defcon 2 (I will confess I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to what Russia was up to).
Defcon 1
Defcon 1 hits while Europe's bombers are still some distance away. NA starts the nuclear exchange by opening up a silo placed in Florida and targeting Europe (I think). NA soon opens up other silos and started targeting various Euro and African targets. NA also started targeting the silos of his SA ally! At this point I did check to see if defections were off, and indeed they were. I couldn't believe it. Someone was attacking an ally in a game where backstabbing was pointless (any allied cities you hit incur collateral). At one point the African player asked NA if he knew what he was doing, and the NA player said he was "War is hell."
This action caused the SA player to open all surviving silos and launch the whole wad at NA. By the time it was all said and done, the SA player had incurred 67.8m collateral, the highest collateral count outside one of RC's Suicide games that I had ever seen. While this was going on, Russia was attacking Asia (I think), Europe was bombing what was left of NA, and Africa was pounding away at SA. The NA player dropped out soon after all NA assets but a couple of airbases were destroyed.
Europe was ahead on points, and Russia was not far behind when the vic timer started. Europe decided to go ahead and open up silos even though it was likely that Europe would win without them as everyone else had pretty much expended their nukes. The SA player rejoined with about 8 minutes left on the vic timer, but promptly dropped out again, and the timer expired before all of Europe's nukes arrived on their SA targets.
This is not by any means complete, and I'm certain I left a lot of details out, as I couldn't remember a lot of what went down.
