Here's a Diplomacy game I just played this evening, and it ended up being my first-ever Diplomacy win. I was happy since I completely suck at Diplo games. Quite a bit happened in this 4 1/2-game-hour game, and I couldn't remember everything...
I was Asia, G Force 117 was Russia (I've played with him before. He's pretty good IMO), Draiocht was Europe (last time I was in a game with this guy some bozo came on as a spec and overloaded the chat box to the point I had to drop out of the game because the latency was so bad. Haven't really seen him play before so I'm not sure of his experience), Golum was Africa (never seen this one before, and he apparently had some kind of dispute with Draiocht, and those two battled back and forth on the chat box all game long, even bringing up things like logging IPs and junk like that. Golum said something about he "polices" the Internet. I ignored pretty much all of their bickering back and forth and just played my game), Green Peace was NA (I've played with him a couple of times), and sparrow was SA (I've seen him around before, but I can't recall if I've ever played with him)
Defcons 5-2
After placing radar, I set up the silos to try to give some protection to all my cities. I'm still not sure of "proper" silo placement for Diplomacy, or Survivor games in general, but this setup seemed logical. Three silos around India, two in China, and one near Tokyo. I set up half my navy into the Indian, and the rest I lined up in a line in front of Japan. Six subs I sent towards NA/SA, and the other six set up shop in the Indian.
G Force set up silos in western Russia, and deployed his navy in the Arctic. Draiocht set up in western/central Europe as I recall (not sure exactly, as I was not worrying about Europe at the time). Golum had his lined up in two rows of three in central Africa (not really a survivor-type setup), and put some ships in the Indian south of mine, and some in the Atlantic. Sparrow set up two silos in Mexico, and the other four diagonally along the SA mainland, and I think Green Peace had silos in the eastern US but I can't recall for sure. NA did have all its navy in the Atlantic.
Sometime around Defcon 4 or 3, G Force asks me if I wanted to join up with him when the fit hits the shan, and I agreed to do so. Africa was going to be my initial target anyway. Defcon 3 I put all six Pacific based carriers in anti-sub, had a couple of 3-ship groups of battleships out in front.
Late in Defcon 2 I started launching land-based bombers into Saudi, intending to turn towards the silos in Africa. I probably should've launched bombers when it hit Defcon 2, but I was late in getting around to that. Russia launched bombers heading for Cairo.
Defcon 1
Africa opened the silos almost immediately, launching his full fury against Europe. I finished turning my bombers towards the open silos. G Force was the first to leave the Green Alliance, and I immediately joined up with him, though he didn't leave the Green until after the first nuke hit Cairo, so he took 11.3m Collateral. Sparrow and Green Peace left soon afterward. I also launched fighters to try to war off incoming bombers and fighters from Africa that launched after I joined. I ended up taking out 4-5 of Africa's silos myself (I may have got all six, but I can't remember for sure. I think G Force got one or two). I think Africa and Russia ended up combining to blast Europe to oblivion. Africa did get some bomber nukes away before I could get to them, and they hit one or two cities in southern China. He'd initiated an attack from the south, and the Indian Ocean became an aerial battleground. I didn't see what happened to NA in the exchanges, so I'm not sure who hit NA, but NA's silos were also gone
Meanwhile in the Pacific, I opened up my three subs near the NA coast, took out three NA airbases, a couple of radars, and cities on the West Coast. Once I finished with them I sent them back towards China to aid in coastal defense. I tried to do the same to SA but sparrow had a group of ships there and I couldn't do much. I ended up taking the lone sub from that group and sending it back towards Japan. Green Peace left soon afterward after all his assets were wiped out.
In the end, Russia and I were about the only ones with any nukes left (I still had all my silo nukes, six full subs in the Indian and some loaded bombers left), so Russia opened up silos and I started to open up silos, and launching my subs in the Indiasn, targeting what was left of African, NA, SA, and European cities. I'd gone through about half my remaining nukes when the vic timer started, and I ended up retaining three full silos of nukes plus about 15-17 sub-based nukes. I should've finished with more ships but Africa got to my Indian-ocean based carriers when I wasn't looking, and SA (sparrow had left earlier in the game) started coming towards Asia with some bombers, then ended up getting some carriers in the Pacific as well.
Then in the last couple of minutes before the vic timer expired, my ally shot a couple nukes at my silo ("joke nuke" he called it
G Force told me at the end he was so tempted to betray but he didn't do so.
A most enjoyable game even with the annoyance of Draiocht and Golum bickering back and forth on the chat box.
Take Care
