Diplomacy Cease-Fire Fun

Postby snwcrsh » Sat May 26, 2007 2:30 pm

Hi all... on "popular request" here my first debrief. It is actually some days old, but I didn't find the time to get it done earlier. I might miss some details now, but maybe some of the other players are active in the forums and can add things I left out.

Anyway, I sure still remember the main plot as it was one of the most interesting games I played (at least from my point of view).

I started out as Africa, other protagonists were Timeband (Asia), Blah (CCCP), EU (Europe), Belfast (NA) and Dodgy (SA).

While placing subs I immediately private messaged Asia and asked for a mutual agreement on not braking the alliance as it gives us the indian ocean for free, excellent spots to hit EU and USSR and the freedom to deploy defensive fleet elsewhere.

Asia agreed and soon after SA joined the alliance. I don't know if that was SA's initiative or Asia's but I agreed immediately and was very happy about it cause it meant that i have no sea front, i had buffers east and west. In the meantime EU had allied with USSR and NA, so it was a classic 3vs3 setup.

About that time Defcon 3 was coming up and EU publically announced that it "wants no part in this war". Which I found pretty amusing at first, but some minutes later EU privately asked me about a cease fire. I thought about it for a second and agreed -- another front to neglect for now.

As Defcon 1 hit, the setup was still as before, and so I could just harrass russia with bombers, although I did no serious attack yet. SA was pushing up north into the Atlantic and i escorted them with some battleships but was always wary to not put them too close to EU's ships (we actually talked privately and pulled back our ships in time).

The most fun part of it was, that I think nobody noticed our cease fire, at least not my allies. Russia noticed it later as I did a massive bomber attack on their installments, routing my bombers over central europe. I actually misclicked one bomber en route and he dropped a nuke on napoli -- fortunately EU believed the offical excuses of my government that this was a tragic mistake (which it was) and would not happen again.

At that time EU was leading the scoreboard, I was trailing on 2nd. (I think EU scored on NA and SA, but I am not sure). It looked like that would stay for now, I think Asia used most nukes on NA and USSR while SA was busy with NA end Europe.

But eventually Asia noticed that I have a cease fire with EU which I confirmed and explained. I mean, hey, this is survivor. As expected after a while I was kicked out of my alliance (evil backstabbers!) and I immediately allied with Europe which stayed for the rest of the game.

Europe would have taken it down (if I didn't backstab) if Russia hadn't been a bit upset (might have to do with the fact that its "ally" let enemy bombers pass peacefully to bring nuclear wasteland to Russia). So USSR used his remaining Nukes on Europe and put it into 2nd place behind me.

I was pretty much in untouchable position, SA, NA and Asia did not have many nukes left and their fleet partly crippled. My fleet was intact (I didnt move most of it away from my coasts the whole game, there was simply no need) and I had 77 nukes left... Except launching the remaining subs on SA and Asia I did nothing more, waiting to let the victory timer run down and declaring me as the winner with all silos unlaunched.

Wee, what a fun game.

While reading about The Shinybonsai Maneuvre on the forums I was kind of reminded of this game. Although, obviously we did not nuke our cities (which would be a pretty supid plan in survivor mode anyway) but it sure was a rather sneaky backstab against our alliances. Although we did never attack them directly we harmed them pretty good, EU allowing my bombers to pass over its territory giving me a perfect attack vector on russia. I harmed SA by tellingEU about its fleet maneuvres in the Atlantic.

But the key point probably was that our cease fire was not noticed until late in the game, although I don't know when NA or Russia actually noticed -- but it was obviously too late.

Looking forward to more such fun matches, although I doubt this strategy will work a second time.

And lastly, a big thanks to EU -- he was trustworthy and loyal from the beginning and the longer the game lasted, the more convinced I was that he would not backstab, Sorry, you placed only 3rd (and thanks for not retaliating the Napoli Incident!) -- if I launched my silos at asia it would have probably gained you second place, however, it was our goal to keep as many civilians alive and also I didnt want to lower defenses, since except Cairo almost all my cities where unharmed, totalling in less than 30M casualties.
