[KOTH] Ace Rimmer vs. Rædiænt Cæligølæ

Well, finally got into the KOTH series and got a crown!

I wasn't too familiar with the settings (short game time, vic timer, etc) but I figured I could handle it. It was Europe vs Russia and I set up to hit the western part of Russia with a mass sub/bomber wave the moment Defcon 1 hit, but good ol Rædiænt didn't put anything there for me to see, so I held off and just played defense mostly while sending just bombers to take out that "clear" area of his territory (and in hopes of scouting).

It was a pretty good naval battle, but he made the mistake of using his subs in active mode and advancing. Battleships being faster than subs, I only needed to wait until I could spare a couple of bombers and nuke them. I managed to take out a couple with carriers, and some when he launched close to my border.

We did exchange quite a few tactical nukes in the water, but I think I did more damage? zkl, Smiling Buddha, Church? In any event, I think I managed to wipe out his bombers, I sure tried! In the end, just as I was about to unload my silos and subs, the game was over. The victory timer caused me to forget about the game time limit and caught me off guard... :( 124 nukes left!

One trick that might have helped in this game (and in the Radiant vs Samurai game afterwards) would have been the use of subs in passive mode to attack ships within radar instead of active mode. For me, subs in active mode scream out "Hey, here we are! Nuke the @#$# out of me!" Or at least send carriers if its safe.

You certainly did more damage with tactical nukes, but I don't think you actually got any subs - Radiant switched them to passive.

But on that note, surely a nuke shouldn't actually destroy subs unless they were surfaced?

Its very simple, just select your sub/s (you can use the shift button here) and left click the other unit. Works pretty good in diplomacy mode and keeps your subs hidden if you're attacking something you can see using radar from another source.

Also, the other guy (expect in Diplomacy) will think it's bombers or something else he can't see, never suspecting subs.
