Random thought (Secret Santa Mode!)
6 players, standard settings, genocide scoring...
Only, before the start of the game, a seventh person has written down each of the names and assigned them a number from 1 to 6. Each player then picks a number, and the corresponding name is given to them in private.
Each player then (this has to be taken on trust) agrees to only nuke the player they were assigned. Would add an interesting twist to the game in that you'd know you're safe from most of the others, but you have no idea which one it is that's out for you.
You'd have to rely on whoever's attacking the guy attacking YOU to take out his ability to hit YOU.
If, on your way to attack your target you come across a small fleet, you can attack it- but then you don't know if it belonged to the guy you're relying on to help you out. At the same time, it could belong to the guy who is out to get you, in which case letting it slip past you might cost you some cities.
Might be interesting to play a round sometime.

Ever the cynic.
Im assuming some patch for this game mode would have to be made in order for collateral damage to be added to your score if you nuke cities that don't belong to the player you were assigned to hunt and kill?
and no two players can target eachother?
Unless...like you say you manage to get all players in the game to swear that theyll only nuke the player theyre assigned and shame them if they don't, that group of players will be very small. Maybe the KOTH thread players, could maybe trust some of them with this type of game mode.
Guess the ceasefire option comes in very handy for this game

I'd suggest that ANY use of nukes against bystanders is banned, but it could be tried both ways. And yeah, you'd need that 7th player in place to spec and ref. Having people drop would be difficult too- the CPU would nuke everyone and anyone.
Cease fire would be handy, yeah- although conventional weapons against your opponents would have to be allowable or if an enemy fleet sailed past another enemy you'd know they weren't after *them*. Would allow you to piece together too much info possibly.

I think it's a great idea, and incidently, it would work perfectly with my idea on anonymous nukes.
It'd be the perfect combo, like peanut and butter!

This scoring mode would be *awesome* especially in combination with my christmas mod as mentioned before...
wow---why didn't I think of that back then
I guess good ideas only seem obvious after they are thought of
