Four On The Floor...Another Rare Win

Postby Church » Mon May 14, 2007 8:52 am

Here's the final result of a little 2v2 game I'd played with JESUS and a couple of fairly new players earlier this evening. I was Africa, Jesus was Europe, Chopper Read was in NA, and Chaos Machine was in SA.

At game start I placed my entire naval force into the Atlantic, intending to hit SA hard when the time came to let the nukes fly. NA allied with SA, so I allied with Europe. I sent about half my subs towards NA, and half towards SA. I saw that SA had massed its navy near my battleships at Defcon 4, while JESUS was going to work in the North Atlantic. When we started exchanging fire at Defcon 3 I started launching fighters and a couple of bombers to harass SA's naval forces. He took a few of my boats but I lost no carriers in that initial exchange of fire. I started launching bombers in force about halfway through Defcon 2 in preparation for my attack on SA. I'd spotted a radar station or two by that point, and I had a general idea where a couple of SA's silos were from the AA fire.

I started assigning targets for my bomber nukes just before Defcon 1, and I finished up my target assignments a couple of minutes after Defcon 1 hit. During the initial bomb run I found the two SA silos I thought were nearby and I had my bombers start targeting them as well as radar and a newly-discovered airbase in additional to the cities on SA's eastern coastline. I also had three subs start launching nukes at SA's southern cities. SA started sending bombers and fighters my way but I started launching fighters from my carriers to take them down as my nukes were finding their targets. Soon afterward SA and NA started launching silos. I had five subs in the North Atlantic and when I was reasonably sure they'd be safe I went ahead and launched their nukes at both NA and SA targets at the same time that JESUS was initiating a major strike against NA, and by this point I was over 300 points. A SA carrier group managed to slip by and launch an attack on my western coast cities with a trio of subs, so I launched another retaliatory strike with bombers that were freshly reloaded with nukes.

A little later, A trio of subs launched off the southern tip of Africa. I scrambled every aircraft I had available to attempt to kill them before they did too much damage. I did stop them but not before each got about 3-4 nukes away. Then NA managed to sneak up on my eastern coast, just north of Madagascar, where I had no naval forces and they started attacking from there. Ultimately they got Cairo and a few of my eastern cities (I wasn't too concerned since I was still well ahead on points, and they did get one of my silos. I waited it out a little longer, sending whatever fighters I could to help the silos repel incoming bombers and fighters. When the attacks on my eastern coast subsided, I started launching my silos at NA and SA cities ( and sending a couple at the spot where someone was launching sub-based missiles at me. I launched the western three first, then launched the last two. JESUS also started launching his silos and together we turned NA and SA into radioactive-glowing parking lots. He started catching up to me but by the time it was all said and done I had my third multiplayer win since I started playing Defcon a few weeks ago.

I'd thought that maybe NA or SA might try to come from the east, and maybe I should have had some ships in the Indian Ocean, but I decided to take my chances with leaving the Indian undefended, as I didn't want to thin out my navy in the Atlantic fleet. Chances are I would've lost anything I'd put in the Indian and the result would've been the same, except I'd have a few less bombers and fighters to work with in my attacks.

Ace joined our game as a spec as we were nearing the end, and noticed that NA had put three airbases all the way up in Alaska (you can see them in the screenie). Not sure why he did that. Given the territories we were playing, any bombers from those bases wouldn't be able to reach anyone except SA. JESUS mentioned that maybe he was anticipating an attack from the north, but that wouldn't make much sense, either. If I was NA and I was anticipating a possible bomber attack from the north by a Europe player I might put an airbase or two near Hudson Bay along with a radar, but not Alaska unless I was expecting a Russian player to come calling. Even then I'd only put one airbase there, not three.

It was quite obvious when I joined that the two other players were not very experienced. Heh, it was more or less a run for the most points at the end to see who would have the biggest 300+ score.

Yea...it was one-sided, and both players were inexperienced. I think Chaos had long since bailed by the time Ace joined up, and Chopper Read also bailed before the vic timer expired (he may have bailed before Ace arrived, but I thought he was still there and didn't leave until a little while after Ace jumped in).

Truth be told, I think it was only the second or third time an initial attack I launched worked as well as it did.

Well, JESUS did suggest posting it, so I want ahead and did :)

For some reason I couldn't remember all the little details of this game as I did with my last debrief (that one though I wrote down pretty much everything before I posted it).

I still think I have a lot to learn in this game, though I do think I am slowly improving.

The power of religion in that game is disturbing...

nobody likes a tell-tale church. . .

but lets not detract from this glorious and overwhelming triumph. . . I mean, c'mon thingybob and whats-his-face are two of the toughest competitors out there. the odds were really stacked up against us. Its a miracle we survived to tell the tale really. :D

as for the 3 airbases in alaska. . . . I presume they were there for re-loading the carriers off the east coast of africa ?

anyhoo. . . hurahh to church
