Fall of an Emperor, or: How I Learned To Fry Bacon

Postby Ace Rimmer » Tue May 08, 2007 10:12 pm

Well, our duel (Radiant vs Ace) finally ensued (right after a really good 6 player game). Below is the screenshot he provided as I had to leave right after the vic timer started (my PC got switched off) . I did let him know that I had to leave abruptly.

Anyway, I'll try to be as accurate as I can remember without rambling too much... (for those that watched, I'd like their thoughts on my strategy/technique/follow-through on this game)

Defcon 5/4: Learning from my duel with Feud, (exact same territories) I put my silos in (lower) west-central Africa instead of completely abandoning my cities for northwest Africa. I drew a line for Radar and set up my bases/radar along that line, parallel to where I thought he'd put his radar. I was off just a bit though. Anyway. I sent all twelve subs (3 groups of 4) over Europe/Russia to come through the Bering for a late game hit. I placed my entire fleet (minus 4 carriers) just southeast of Madagascar hoping to get "under" him and slip around to Australia to hit him from the backside. The last four carriers were sent to the tip of S. America to wait for passing subs that might try to sneak in from the Pacific.

Defcon 3/2/1: I sent scouts across the Indian northeast staying just below his radar range, but I found nothing. Hmm, this is not good I thought. I then began moving east and spotted a couple of ships near Antarctica. I realized he must be trying the same maneuver (?) I was and changed my fleet formation to match, carriers moved north and battleships moved south to meet him. It seems he was a bit more prepared for me than I was for he and it didn't take long for that tell tell sign of mysterious "incoming" fire from unknown places to show up. I immediately dispatched fighters to search and destroy his bombers and launched a few of my own bombers, partly to save them, partly to hit his fleet. Set a couple to missile mode and attempted to nuke him. I've found that sometimes a bigger benefit to nuking ships is not so much destroying them, but getting the other player on the defensive and scrambling to figure out where that nuke will land, thus distracting him momentarily from the real battle.

I was able to push his Antarctic fleet back and held my position back at Madagascar. We battled pretty much the entire game after that with him in the Indian and me just at the tip of S. Africa. He'd send bombers, I'd send fighters. I'd send bombers, he'd send fighters. Eventually, he wore my fleet down enough to overrun me with fighters and discovered my entire setup. I was really worried at this point, since I knew that he knew exactly where everything was. In the mean time, I kept fumbling with my subs to get them in position. There were several times I forgot about them and they lay dormant over Norway, or Siberia. Heh, a good fight will do that too you!

After his spies disclosed my ground units, I knew I had to act quickly. I made a dash for Micronesia and launched bombers. When the nukes started to fly, I flooded east Asia with fighters and found 4 silos, 3 bases, and a couple of radar. I also sent a couple of bombers along the northern border of Asia and found his northern radar. I killed it quickly.

He launched several times with subs from east Africa and managed to start hurting me defensively. A silo here, radar there, things didn't look good. Plus, since he had spent some subs, I expected them to start heading for my now Japan bound subs. I did leave one group over eastern Russia since they were in range of 3 or so of his silos. After a while I was left with 3 full silos, and one silo with 2 nukes. I was just about in position with my 12 subs when my carriers radar picked up his subs pining there way directly towards mine. I knew then it was time for action. Win or lose, I had to make my move. I put my silos in launch mode, targeted the 4 or so if his i could see plus some central Asian cites and let fly, hoping he'd used up his resources in the Indian and would make a counter attack with his silos. Sure enough, he did. All twelve subs then unloaded upon every target they could reach. About midway through this is when I had to leave. The vic timer was somewhere around 50m or so. I did get to see the start of the destruction in Asia, but only the start.

All in all, it was a very good game.

4 words:

"The Empire Strikes Back"

Right now I have to crash the sack but will fill in some of my own views tomorrow. It was a wonderful game of nuclear chess and I look forward to the rematch. Mind you this game took place at appprox 8am my time after several tiring games earlier that night. Not using it as an excuse, you won fair and square. I made a mistake I will not make again. Next time I will come fresh from the Emporial sack to avenge the Hologram the is known to be an ace.

What a guy!
