Current Standings:
Current Status: Round 3 (click on images for full size 1280x1024)
Game 1: Winner, zkl
Ace's comments: Didn't spectate, but obsevers stated it was a rather strangely and more or less conservatively played game. It seems the tournament has a strange affect on players. ?
Game 2: Winner, JESUS
Ace's comments: Well, what can I say other than my game fell apart from the start. I ended up as Africa. Hank and JESUS quickly allied and I asked Asia to join me, so he sent a request. However, just before I agreed, Hank convinced JESUS to let me in so I joined the Euro/Russian alliance instead. Hamster had his entire navy in the Pacific and I thought I had time to exploit the undefended east Asia. Unfortunately, JESUS sent a horde of bombers in and we competed for those points. S. America put up a real good fight as I tried to hit him head on (a mistake) and found the bulk of his navy huddled up against a Feud style setup near Sau Paulo. It was near impossible to get through. Add to that the fact that the Indian was unsecured and my silos received a heavy beating when I launched, and you can see where I placed.
Game 3: Winner, E. J. Homeowner
Ace's comments: Was a strangely played game by all involved, but we (spectators) were fairly sure that Homeowner would win. He however seemed to struggle with the CPU's navy in the beginning and looked very conservative in dealing with that situation. Zjoere could have scored better had his backstab been done more "properly". With six subs just off th e coast of Japan, Three full silos, and at least two bases with bombers (not sure if they had nukes), Eastern Asia could have provided him with many more points. Instead, only the six subs and a few nukes from silos were used. Zjoere also didn't take advantage of his complete naval superiority over Europe. [13347]WOPR's placement was a bit confusing (the old "spine" setup, sorta) in Africa. DueAccident's Placement was a bit odd as well.
Game 4: Winner, Radiant Caligula

Game 3
We only had 4 players as polonium and jcb didn't turnup, so I knew this could be interesting, and I joked at the beginning how I bet I'd be the 1 of the 4 who didn't go through. Turned out to be true.
We started off, and Zjoere had some trouble syncing the data or something, so we went to real time to wait for him.
I was fairly happy with China, and went for a fairly offensive silo and airbase placement.
I placed 6 battleships and some carriers in the Indian ocean, along with subs.
I put most of the rest in the Pacific, with subs for North America and South America.
My game plan was to hit early, as I expected to be hit quite hard, and it went really well, as for all of the match bar the closing minutes I was either 1st or second (as homeowner took over me).
I joined with Zjoere. Homeowner with WOPR, and obviously comps were left unallied.
I hit Cairo, a fair chunk of Eastern Europe, Western America (which Homeowner was vying for..), Mexico city, though Jcbturbo had already taken a chunk of it before me, so I didn't get maximum points. I then went to attack Lima and some of Western South America, but again Jcbturbo hit some before me so I didn't get full points.
I thought *great!, large amounts of points!*, but then the attacks started. My Indian fleet was demolishedby WOPR and possibly homeowner, I couldn't tell. While this was going on, I was oblivious to Jcbturbo taking out my Pacific fleet, though I managed to salvage some of that.
I diverted all bombers from heading home after a handy bombing run, to attack WOPR's forces in the Indian, but somehow he overcame my bombers and fighters (very well played, not sure how you pulled that off
)
Soon more and more red forces appeared around my border, with WOPR's fleet and some of Homeowners, I defended fairly well without taking massive damage. I saw a couple of Jcbturbo's nukes heading my way, but my silo's mainly defended that off.
But the damage was mounting. I knew Polonium was out of the running as Europe was glowing fiercely, and I knew I could count on Zjoere
, so I thought I might just hold on as the victory timer appeared.
Then so did Zjoere's subs near Tokyo, so all hell broke loose, I knew my time had come, and I fell down the table to 4th (effectively 3rd still due to the cpu), and I hoped I might outlive the torrent of nukes from all but Polonium, and I nearly did.
Me and Zjoere were very close in score as time was near expiring, I thought I might just take it if my defence held together. Then we were level on points (69) and then he went ahead and I knew it was over, then the timer went very shortly after....it was so close..I nearly made it... :p
It was a good game. Man of the match to Homeowner, as he did very well with his starting position and he ended first. Congratulations to WOPR and to Zjoere for a well timed backstab.
See you all in the next round, and well done.

Close...for 3rd
Game 4 has come and gone.
Radiant Caligula (no surprise there
) and late entry RedDwarf took top 2 spots with Hyperion in 3rd, just 2 points ahead of me
I've not got time for screenshots but it was a good game...as usual though I found that by the time I attacked anywhere Radiant or someone else had got his nukes in first. I was aiming for 100million kills and ended up with 70odd million so fell a good bit short.
Call me a kipper but I teamed up with Radiant at the start...I was USA he was SA. My thinking was that he's bound to come after me so I might as well see where his units are (not that it did me any good mind).
Not long after DefCon 1 up pops a gazillion (honest!
) of Radiant's subs off the coast of Florida and Mexico...I had decided to go with a Weps strategy and abandoned my poor citizens...all my silos were in Alaska along with my airbases. Again, I was thinking along the lines of 100million kills = at least 100pts no matter what happens to my population.
As it turned out this backfired at the end.
Hyperion and myself were neck and neck...I rejoined with Radiant and he went after Hyperion while I tried to pick the bones of Asia with my more or less intact fleet. I also had 3 subs on their way to take out the wee places in eastern USSR, but they got stomped on just as I was about to launch with the victory timer counting down.
While all this is going on I briefly take 3rd but Taedal is hammering away at the smoking ruins of my east coast and Hyperion takes 2nd by 2 wee tiny points.
Brilliant game...well played all...good luck Hyperion in the next round you jammy b'stard

What, with no silos?
EDIT

You even had second lowest death rate. If you had been just a tad more progressive, you'd still be in (who knows, you might have won?
Yes this is true I needed a few more kills.
A couple of weeks ago I watched a game with Ace, Weps and a couple others, and I followed Weps' strategy from that game in the tournament game last night. I said to Ace after watching their game that I thought Weps lost because his fleet seemed to get stuck off the coast of Asia when it would have been better to swing around into the Indian and pick some targets off in Africa and USSR.
I fell into the same trap last night - I had a huge, well armed fleet, prodding away at the long dead corpse of Asia's east coast. I should have moved around a bit and probably would have got the couple of million kills I needed to take third.
Interestingly, despite having no city defense, I could easily have finished with the lowest death toll, had Taedal not nuked the hell out the ruins left behind from Radiant's backstab during the end game.
Ifs and buts, swings and roundabouts...
2pts...

um, now I didn't have to use ANY silos at you, except a few strays. I was able to focus most fire at Hyperion because I already had killed most of you with subs and a few (unchallenged) bombers...
EDIT: ah, you mean if you were stripped of silos. Protecting silos from counterstrikes actually works! What do you think my fleet where doing down in Sao? If you protect the hazard zone you can magnum launch early and STILL have 6 silos to defend when the rain starts coming in. If you are opting for a no defense strategy, then you better be hella offensive to capture the points before anyone else, because your population is a big red minus no matter what.

Game 4
Trying to get started:
Well...where the hell to begin
first of all a great big thank you to Radiant Caligula (although i shall have my eye on you always for that game, grr), trying to set up server...we had 2 'Rudehealth' players so had to go through the elimination process...apparently it does not pay to make the password for the game appear on a public thread...combining this with 8 spectator spots...people were coming and going, jumping in asking to play and generally being prats, luckily in the end Radiant sorted it and we had 5 of our 6 players and a quick race to get 6th place (after an amusing countdown and the spot was opened)...i believe WikketClown? got there first, i honestly don't remember
please forgive some memory loss in this debriefing, im sure the others accounts will be better, but you will understand why. (demosthenes: no show). And the game begins...
Defcon 5/4:
I get Africa...YES!
my favourite to play as, Rudehealth gets Asia (so i quickly ask for an alliance...which is agreed), Radiant gets SA, domino (aka ynbnair) NA, taedal i think got EU and i guess that leaves Wikket was it? with Russia, NA and SA ally, as do EU and Russia. Both of my carrier fleets and 6 subs are either side of india, protected by my alliance...crafty i thought. a few subs south of the tip of SA and a few towards NY (which i lose and dont know how) my battleships under the edge of western Africa. Im positioned. Im ready. My goal...Orgazmo launch...nuke everyone and everything fast...after successfully tricking Rudehealth (sorry friend
) into using all his silos on Russia and EU's silos i prepared myself and calmed my nerves.
Defcon 3: It's quiet...too quiet, i set all my carriers to bomber mode, Radiants navy is nowhere in sight
...im cautious and send out patrolling beam bombers south and west for carriers...but nothing
...im nervous and suspicious. a few of his fighters stray here or there but my battleships make mince meat of them.
Defcon 2: Nothing...nothing at all, EU's fleet hasn't moved. Rudehealth hasnt moved, Radiant hasnt come near me...it's scary. everyone is being cautious and the only thing i can hear is my heart pounding in my chest and my girfriend wishing i'd text her back (didn't happen, ill regret that tomorrow
)
Defcon 1: 8 spectators...a decidely strong if over presumptious(sp?) server from Radiant that stays strong for a while but things change and then it happens...i let loose...i start systematically letting loose my silos...im opening my 3rd silo when it happens to me...high latency...connection problems...15 seconds....17 seconds...20 seconds....i plead and i plead with spectators to drop, all sitting their in silence (private chat), probably laughing at me or telling eachother to leave
but no one does...25 seconds...Radiant helps me plead with them a little after i admit defeat before my first nuke even lands and that ill have to leave at this rate...1 or 2 spectators drop...1 or 2 keep trying to join (bastards), no effect...i manage to launch a few bombers from my indian ocean carriers at Russias cities whilst Rudehealth is busy launching all his silos on EU and Russias silos
bless him.
Seems everyone was positioning their subs to backstab their allies...everyone but me
i rarely backstab.
The first break...Domino leaves Radiant's embrace and opens up all his silos, NA and SA are at war...Radiant opens up all his silos and theres my chance!...i painfully and slowly manage to open up my 4 subs under him and take out major population targets before he takes out my subs
its enough i tell myself, it's a start. He starts lobbing nukes at my battleships on my coast, always missing short...so he sends in his battleships and air power...i start losing ships...26 seconds....27 seconds...my connection problems are killing me. Im about to leave...but i was saved...Xocrates...god bless you sir! changes his spectator name and tells me to close my comm box, i do so and i start synchronising!
THANK GOD!!!...just in time as well...Rudehealth was just about to f*ck me
, i watched all his subs surface on my eastern coast and make the decision to strike first, knowing ill lose my carrier groups in the indian ocean as he has his battleships and carriers there, i empty them of fighters, my bombers armed with nukes already on route to EU and Russia...i end our 'alliance' and launch all my midflight bombers on Rudehealth...they empty their bombing bays immediatly and take out some of his cities...his fleet is also destroyed in the indian and he's left with pinging subs...im left with 1 carrier fleet i managed to retreat and 4 bombers...crap...
im 4th in the game...i need points....Radiant is way in front with his 150+ points...followed by (again, i dont remember who, lol) and then me with 60 and domino with 54....domino is out of it, he grouped all his silos in north west canada and launched early...Radiant destroyed him.
I feel it...my heart....everyone is quiet...Rudehealth has nothing left or isnt using it on me...EU and Russia have left me relatively alone...but Radiant...Radiant the sadistic son of a bitch bacon eating prat
, not content with his 150+ points and my gaming troubles before...moves his whole fleet against my coast...starts to bomb my cities with countless sub launches and bombers...i scramble every single fighter as soon as they regenerate and spend the last 20 minutes microing what i have left, scavanging...defending....avoiding Rudehealths pinging subs in the indian, fighting off carrier bombers and fighters and microing my 4 bombers to hit india again and again...taking one small point at a time while Radiant is determined to see me out of the tournament...i pray for the timer to go faster
...i pray for someone to hit domino more
...i pray for my bombers to land on carriers with nukes
....
...relief...game over...2 or 3 points in it and i scrape 3rd...thank you Xocrates...thank you Radiant! ill be ready come the next round...mark my words my comm box will not open once!

great account Hyp!
reddwarf was the filler... (placed 2nd)
I placed 4 lone carriers in the Pac aimed at east Asia. Dammit someone got Tokyo right before my bombers approached, but I managed to redirect and got off many big hits down the coast. Amazingly most of my bombers from the group survived the return and was able to pound at India and later the east coast of Africa.
I kept your fleet away with some tactical strikes and targeted your silos right away. most of my subs were aimed at NA, because Domino was all open (no way I was forfeiting those points). I rarely backstab as well, but this is a FFA tournament after all.
I wasnt playing to nuke you to 4th, I was just trying to keep ahead of reddwarf, nuttin personal.
Next game I host will have a lower limit for specs and PW will most definately be PMed first.
all in all a great game.

I concur
Game 1:
Well, since this was my game I don't know what happened in much of the map. I placed my fleet on the Atlantic except for 3 BS, and carriers that get Pacific duty. Mike's silo positioning was quite effective in keeping my sub/bomber nukes out of kinshasa. zkl (Bonsai) requested to ally and after some hesitation I accepted. I kept trying hitting Africa (I never got to know where his silos where until after they launched).
Eventually, Bonsai backstabs and I notice it just as his nukes are approaching my coastline. I immediately leave the alliance and initiate a counter attack. Due to his silo placing I consider that I would be wasting too many nukes trying to take them out and go for cities instead. That was probably a mistake since even with about 10 bombers inbound, I'm not sure I managed to hit NY (mind you, they were coming from the wrong side).
All in the meantime, I keep taking out subs from all sides by several players. I don't think I've ever killed so many subs in a single game.
I open my silos to try a snipe shot at moscow, but right around this time Eu backstabs russia and I decide to go all expecting for europe to do the same against russia and kill it's silos. Unfortunately they didn't and I manage to waste a lost of nukes. I get only some minor hits.
And that's pretty much my side of the story.
Game 2: Didn't spectate
Game 3:
I was afk during defcon 3 and 2, so there is rather a lot I didn't watched. Most specs predicted early on that this would be Homeowner's victory. Due's silos seemed too far apart, Zjoere placing was also probably not optimal since not only it did not protected his own, like it would be a shield protecting Due (especially after they allied).
Many players seemed to make some odd decisions, but overall a good game.
Game 4:
This game was insane! With lots of nukes flying everywhere.
Domino's (ynbniar) placing was a high gamble, since it forego any chances of city defence. Since he and Caligula allied, caligula knew this and obviously backstabbed barely into defcon 1.
The placing for pretty much every player seemed to lack a certain efficiency. Europe particularly was mostly within radar range from Africa. Europe also made the strange decision of apparently turtling. Leaving his whole fleet, including subs, close to his borders during most of the game. Russia positioning and alliance with europe gave him a good defense system for his cities
Like I said. The game was insane when it came to throwing nukes around. Here is a screenie of a usual moment (notice the amount of yellow arrows at the edge of the screen) in the game (yeah, there was so much inbound + lag that I had to shut down every graphic option just to try to keep at 10 fps)
Game 5: Not Played
Game 6: Not played
