Ace vs. Feud: Part Deux

Postby Feud » Tue Apr 17, 2007 8:18 am

The long awaited rematch between Ace Rimmer and myself occurred tonight, and for the benefit of those who were not there to see it, here is a brief write up (from my perspective).

With standard settings and random territories Ace held Africa while I camped out in Asia. Anticipating a naval battle similar to our last game I placed the bulk of my navy in the Indian, however I sent a mixed carrier/battleship group east across the pacific to intercept any sneak attacks, backed by a six sub group as an added surprise in case the water was clear.

I quickly found the Indian Ocean to be clear, and panicked thinking he had sent his whole fleet around SA, and would overrun my meager defenses. Quickly scouted Africa and found that he had hid his silos well from me (in western Africa), but in the process had left open his cities. Thinking his strategy was to bait me into hitting them, then pick apart my exposed silos and then have free reign over my people, I decided to take the bait and see what happened.

Figuring my best bet would be to get as many of my nukes away before he was setup to strike back, I quickly launched an all out bomber and silo attack on Africa, basically destroying everything except for the Ivory Coast. Ace shot down most of my bombers in the process, and took out two or three silos as well.

I then diverted a carrier group and some empty subs to defend Japan, while I swung my remaining Indian Ocean fleet south to reinforce my eastern bound carriers and subs. About this time my carrier group off the west coast of SA discovered a massive horde of passive sonar subs. The was much death that followed.

A battle then erupted of the West African coast, as I tried to plow the road for the last of my subs. Ace decimated my navy, but I managed to disrupt things enough that my subs got their entire barrage off before being struck back.

I was then out of nukes, and all I could do was play the waiting game. Ace quickly struck back by hitting Tokyo, luckily he surfaced near the carrier group I had diverted, and he only got two missiles off. He then commenced to pound me with bombers from North of Russia, and from his bases in Africa. By what can best be described as miraculous two of my silos and three airfields managed to survive the strike.

His silos then opened up, and he launched on my cities. Fortunitly my silos and fighters were there. The game ended in a solid victory for myself.

What I feel was the real key was that I could hide my silos in such a place that he HAD to go through them, but the only place he could effectively hide his silos left nearly his entire populace open. As a result, I could send almost all of my missiles after points with very few losses, while he was forced to try to break my defenses first. All in all it was an excellent game. Well played Ace!

Yes, in hindsight I think I could have won the game had I done one thing differently...

It went exactly as Feud described. I placed everything in west Africa wanting to avoid a naval fight in hopes of being able to pick off his hopefully scattered navy. I did send 4 carriers and four battleships to northern Russia for a surprise attach from there. What I should have done was swap out my spent carriers for fresh ones. I kept the other eight parked right next to my silos for 90% of the game. I didn't move them until his fleet tried to come up the Atlantic. I think that would have allowed me to take out his last two silos and leave me my remaining bombers (my bases were still full of their "extra" nukes) and a full load of six silos to take out his cities.

Instead I went all out with my silos (targeting his last two remaining first) and was forced to send the last 6 or eight bombers on a suicide run for one last hit on his cities. I was confident my silos would take his out leaving me the rest to land freely giving me enough to get close in score or win. I watched in amazement at two silos defend against six well timed silos. What was worse is they took out several of my more important nukes headed for the bigger cities in the waves that followed. He certainly had them in the right spot.

Heh, I sent all twelve subs in groups of four across the pacific under S. America and kept them in passive. I almostput them in active mode but decided against it just as they were about to switch oceans. Fatal mistake. I noticed a "look what I found" comment and quickly checked my subs. I could only see about four. I split them in two switched to active and targeted carriers. Only one sub survived. That lone sub was the one that went for Tokyo. In any event, it was a really great and challenging game. The more the challenge the better I enjoy it.

Next time will be different.

Hey Feud, when you launched from the Indian early in the game and I nuked it, what did I hit? I diverted six bombers there.

Edit: Let this be a lesson for others who think leaving silos and bases alone is a good idea. There were several runs from northern Russia that I made which could have taken out that single radar and another base or two. Leaving the radar and his bases to launch fighters for extended radar helped out his "miracle" silos a whole bunch! I left them alone overconfident in my ability to take out two "measly" silos. Had he not been able to see my incoming strike at the end, I could have landed many more nukes.

When I launched from the Indian I used a group of six subs, you dropped a nuke on them and killed three. I wasn't too happy about that.
