countersmurf, ftw!

Two pretty good games.

First Game it's me as the USA, Idaho as Europe and Steve as S. America vs Russia/Asia/Africa. Countersmurf was Africa and I knew that he'd be the one to make a serious run for first and asked if my team mates could handle the Atlantic. After a confident yes, I set my entire fleet in the Pacific.

I was able to wipe out the pacific presence after defcon 3 and began my assault on Asia.

I had talked with Idaho and told him I would launch early at Russia and take out his silos (we could see five of them). Defcon 1 and I launch all six silos at Russia hoping to gain the points there early and have my silos for defense the rest of the game. Of course Idaho gets there first (seems there was some miscommunication  ) and my silo launch is more or less wasted. No problem as I'm still the leader.

However, as I'm pounding Asia, countersmurf defects from his alliance and pulls ahead at the end for the win.

Good game by all.

The second game countersmurf is the USA and I'm Europe. I knew I had to be a lot more agressive if I was gonna beat countersmurf. So...

I pm him and tell him I'm wanting to join at Defcon 3. He agrees and lets me know S. America is coming along for the ride. Russia keeps trying to join me, but I just abstain each time. I wanted to hit Russia hard and early, get the point lead and then hit countersmurf. Hank is below me as Africa and I get a cease fire going with the intention of joining him later (during the hit on countersmurf). We agree that London and Cairo are freebies and neither will shoot down nukes passing over the other.

Defcon 1 arrives and I hit Russia pretty hard, he drops. At the same time, countersmurf has bombers passing over the UK and Iceland with subs hitting Africa. I launch fighters (while still allied) and take out as many as I can after he launches. He asks me why as I'm targeting his silos with mine, and then I defect. During the color change Hank tells me that the cease fire is off, but means that because I changed it automatically switched off. I misunderstood and turned off cease fire with him and started bombing his silos. Sorry Hank.

Anyway, unbelievably, South America starts hitting the USA while still allied and gets taught a lesson in collateral damage. My nukes arrive and take out the USA's silos and remaining cities and I join Hank and Mr. President after resolving our miscommunication.

Excellent game.

Credit to Ace. This was Defcon at it’s best. He played me for a fool.

Having secured an alliance with South America, ACE convinced me that he wanted to join. I now had what I thought was a strong alliance and I proceed to place the bulk of my fleet in the pacific leaving only 6 ships in the atlantic.

With Europe now an allied territory, I send as many bombers as I can muster to strike Western Russia and North Africa on the stroke of Defcon 1. Unfortunately I only get a few of my nukes away before I notice my bombers being destroyed by friendly fighters. I quickly re-target my bombers and let my nukes fly at ACE’s cities. ACE quickly defects. And shoots down everything I have in the air, except two nukes, which manage to hit London.

After some minor skirmishes between Africa and Europe, Ace joins the Red alliance, to cover his back and he commits to a full-scale launch on me. Having perfect intelligence on the position of my structures, he makes short work or my radars, flowed by my silos. He is helped by my other ally, SA, seeing my weakness and launching his silos on me as well.

Meanwhile in the pacific, my main fleet wipes out a small Russian contingent, before encountering the bulk of asia’s fleet. The battle dosen’t go well as I’m preoccupied trying to salvage something in the Atlantic.

My fleet is gone, American defenses are destroyed, and Ace runs away with most of the points.

Those six ships had me worried. Plus, when I didn't take down all your bombers and I saw those nukes get launched, I was a bit nervous until they passed over my silos (which were in launch mode) and hit my cities.

This was one of the rare exceptions where I was able to win through "diplomacy" and planned it from the start. Most of the time I have to rely on massive amounts of kills.

People drop and get dropped for many reasons. The player in this game most likely dropped because he didn't get a Euro/Russian alliance going and he watched as western Russia turned to radioactive waste in a matter of moments after Defcon 1.

  1. He's got a bad internet connection
  2. The host has a bad internet connection
  3. An emergency comes up
  4. He gets mad/upset/whatever and throws a "I quit" tantrum
  5. His ISP gives him unwarranted problems
  6. He really thinks global thermonuclear war has broken out and runs off to the local bomb shelter
  7. Aliens abduct him
  8. His wife/girlfriend drags him away from the keyboard
  9. *He passes out from playing online games for four days straight and falls on his PC pulling the Ethernet cable out of it
  10. His boss tells him to get back to work

*I once stayed up for 6 days straight playing Super NES/Sega games over spring break. Only ate brownies the entire time. My friends mom would get up to go to work, we'd be in front of the TV, she'd come home, we'd still be in front of the TV. The only time we left our spot clutching the controller was to walk down to the video rental place (a couple of blocks away) and get more games.
