Balancing the scales

Postby Xocrates » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:07 pm

Well, after yesterday’s poor display by my part, today’s game went rather smoothly. Although I admit the opposition today might have been a little less experient, with a few exceptions.

So, default rules and random territories. 6 Player game, with me as Europe, MHQ as N. Am, Centeran as Asia, world idiot as Africa, Nukealized as S. Am and Ican as Russia.

Game starts, I place my units and immediately move a group of subs northwards so as to hit Russia later on. S. Am and Africa ally and I receive a proposition from Asia. Not being a direct threat while at the same time it could help me take out Russia while being unlikely that it would manage to get Moscow before me, I gladly accept. Not much later S. Am proposes to join us but with Centeran’s vote and my abstention, it does not pass.

Anyway, defcon 3 and 2 finds my fleet being attacked by the US while Russian fleets also move towards it. As Defcon 1 hits American subs manage to take London and Manchester – At this point I was beginning to fear this could go really badly.
However N. Am forces retreat and I soon realize that the two or three Russian ships I had on radar were the only Russian ships on the Atlantic. Add this to poor unit placement on Russia and its downfall was evident (I believe that, despite the [DEMO] tag in MHQ name’s, Ican was the true demo in the game, since when I joined the game both he and MHQ had the tag. His poor performance suggested he was probably a new(er) player).

So, several bombers and a few subs later, Russia is a toxic wasteland with the juicy points from Moscow and Leningrad coming mostly to me. Ican eventually drops.
I also took Cairo along the way.

Without Russian coverage I assess the danger of a backstab from Centeran. However he seems more interested in Africa, sending countless resources there, including silo nukes. I declare he is no longer a threat, and since he already lost his major cities, not a worthy target so I decide a backstab by or against him is unlikely.

With Russia gone, I move towards N. Am, however since most of my bombers are now residing in the airfields or dead, I decide to use my remaining fleet mostly as a wall while I place a group of subs within range of New York and Washington.

During most of the game I was a bit unaware of what Africa, Asia and S. Am did, since that, with the exception of the odd bomber from Africa, they never concerned me much. S. Am drops, probably due low score although he still had a considerable force.

My sub attack on New York and Washington is highly successful, and adding to the points from Moscow, Leningrad, and Cairo I’m well in the lead. I move my remaining fleet back and place them in a more defensive position.

Afterwards, I made a bomber run sending my bombers over Greenland expecting to take the mostly untouched part of central US (the west coast was rubble for a long time now). However MHQ manages to detect me early and additionally he had more radars and silos there than I initially expected. I change the bomber target to the radars and silos, in the hopes of taking that region with my own silos later on. This was mostly successful, but not many bombers returned to base.

Somewhere along the way, I use my last subs to take some African cities.

By this time N.Am launches his silos against me, being vastly unsuccessful with only one or two hits. After his attack finishes, the countdown timer begins and I use three of my silos to rain death to his central cities, I miss Chicago but get several small cities around it. While this happens, Africa uses one or two of his silos against me, but due to the low number of incoming nukes my remaining silos take most of them easily, only getting a hit on Paris and little else.
When my launch on N. Am approaches its conclusion, I use my remaining silos against Africa to get a few more points. For some unknown reason, Asia drops about this time, meaning that at game end me and Africa (the host) were the only remaining players.

Final score:

Always

Although this game was made before your announcement. So it was a consequence of my mighty divination powers.
