The 600+ Quest: Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo

Postby Ace Rimmer » Wed Mar 07, 2007 4:58 pm

Let me see if I can put this story together correctly...

S. America, Europe and I (USA) join. USSR, Asia, and Africa join.

I begin to explain that the biggest immediate threat to our alliance is caranthir.pkk and place nearly my entire naval force in the Atlantic. I send two groups of 4 battleships out to the outstretches of our radar coverage towards the African coast, with carriers nestled close to the Caribbean. Dirge (S. America) has put all of his visible fleet in the south Atlantic.

Defcon 4 arrives and the main contingent of the African navy appears next to my forward battleships. I recall them immediately and move my carriers forward to intercept at Defcon 3. I also spot the remainder of caranthir.pkk's navy approaching the massive S. American fleet. I request that a concerted effort is made to rid the seas of any and all African ships at all costs. I put every bomber I own in the air over the Atlantic and Kentuckyfried sends in a portion of his.

Defcon 3 arrives and half of car's fleet is still in view. Of course, with something like 40+ bombers in the air and most of them at a safe firing distance, his Atlantic forces disappear from the globe. I feel partly relieved especially after I zoom back out to see what's become of the ships in the south Atlantic. No surprise there, S. America was victorious as far as I could tell. I mean, his entire navy vs. some carriers.

Back at the beginning of the game I had placed 8 subs in two groups of 4 and sent them on their merry way towards Norway in hopes that I could get a shot at Leningrad and Moscow. I made sure to inform Europe that I was lending him some sub support so he wouldn't be surprised when eight of my subs surfaced just off his coast.

Defcon 1: Wanting to get the jump on Europe, I surfaced all eight the second the option to appeared. Europe's radar only revealed a couple of Russian silos, so I wondered how many nukes would make it. A few moments later, the first missiles were off and some of Europe's subs surfaced. I knew I had a good chance at all those points now.

No too long afterwards, car decided to raise a fleet of subs where his battleships had once been. However, with 3 or 4 of my bombers still in the air in naval mode, they were neutralized quickly. I had given most of my bombers east African targets already when six triangles appeared in Africa below Spain. I took this opportunity to send a few nukes that way via bombers. :)

With my run against Russia successful and giving me an early lead, I decided to make a risky move. I took the 4 subs I had keeping an eye on the gap between Canada and Greenland and sent them to the Caribbean. With Europe battling Africa/Russia and with S. America still mostly out of firing range (and focused on Africa) I planned to defect.

I'm not sure what Asia was doing most of the game, but at one point I spotted several bombers making a run over Alaska (via radar) and moved the only force I had in the Pacific (four battleships) north to take out what I could. Later he nuked my coast with the remaining bombers and of course unchallenged subs. He mistakenly packed his battleships on top of his launching subs and received a few nuclear gifts from some of my better bomber pilots.

I had purposely left the pacific unguarded so I didn't waste time there after I was sure those bombers weren't coming inland. Using 8 carriers I had in the Caribbean, I sent every bomber over Central America due west and went to launch mode. When the majority of them were ready, the last four subs in my arsenal surfaced and began attacking Dirge. I waited till the last moment and left the alliance and requested to join caranthir.pkk who had himself earlier defected from his alliance. He obliged and I quickly asked him where the Asian installations were. Asia was the last place with big cities. After I defected, Europe managed to kill all my bases and one of my silos leaving me without a single fighter to repel bombers.

Now that car had marked them for me on the white board, I opened up my silos and synced them to hit eastern Asia. Car had marked the spots precisely enough for me to hit a couple of radar stations without ever seeing them (and with the first nuke that made its way through). When most of my missiles were airborne over eastern Russia/Alaska the victory timer was well under way. Asia opened up his silos as the last of my silo-strike came in. That effectively secured my lead.

That's when it becomes a real challenge, and to me that makes it even more enjoyable.
