Learning with one's errors (mine)

Postby Xocrates » Wed Mar 07, 2007 12:54 am

So, I decide to practice a little Defcon and create a 4 player game (my PC sometimes slows down with 6), random placing and default rules.

I end up with Africa, and then we have Gulok Republic as S.Am, ABEL as Europe and Hank Scorpio as N. Am.

I place my fleet in the Atlantic (obviously) except for a group of subs that I intend to send through the pacific and try to surprise N. Am or S. Am.

I analyze my alliance options, being the obvious option Europe, but consider to go rogue and try to hit Europe with bombers. However by Defcon 4, S. Am proposes an alliance and I accept, believing that if we push into the North Atlantic we could probably control de game. I do keep however a reserve small group of subs in the south Atlantic.

As soon as Gulok joins me, I realize to my horror that he placed most of his fleet in the pacific except for a group. That pretty much means that I’m mostly alone against both ABEL’s and Scorpio’s fleets.

Gulok soon moves with is bombers, fleet and silos against N.Am, completely decimating it during the game. I make two bomber runs on Europe from my airfields, but although I lost very few bombers (if any), I score very few hits (the two runs managed to destroy 1 silo, 1 radar and a couple hits on some of the eastern cities. Like I said, I really suck on Africa-Europe).
I did manage to intercept a considerable European bomber run though, taking out most of Europe’s bombers.

In the mean time I move my fleet northwards and try to take the north atlantic (also making the mistake of doing this during a bomber run, meaning that I had no inland support). After a hard battle, and the arrival of Gulok’s only atlantic fleet, we manage to secure the North Atlantic except for a few subs. During the course of the battle I successfully launch nukes from three subs scoring hits on a radar, London and Manchester.

However since Gulok arrived later, he pretty much had the Atlantic for his own.

So, situation status: Gulok is the leader after leveling N. Am with about 120 points. He lost central America but Sao Paolo is untouched.
I come second with around 60 and pretty much only having lost Cairo, and having done little damage to Europe but having no fleet or bombers to continuing to harass it. All I have are 6 subs in the pacific, 3 just under Sao Paolo and my silos.

I conclude I don’t have many choices left, and verifying that Gulok is low on nukes (about 15) I move in to the backstab and collect the precious points in Sao Paolo and nearby cities. I also launch my subs in the Pacific knowing them to be a lost cause since amost of Gulok’s fleet is protecting his western shore, but hope to scrap some points from the rubble in N. Am and S. Am.

So, in between the few hits in Europe and the backstab, I manage to get enough points to get into the lead (120 to about 100 for Gulok). However by this time, already into the end game countdown, Europe launches while at the same time Gulok harasses me with his remaining bombers.

Anyway, long story short, Europe manages to take enough points for me to go into second, while Gulok scraps a few more points.
