The 600+ Quest: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

Postby Ace Rimmer » Wed Feb 28, 2007 5:14 pm

The first game was survivor, 150m population, and variable credits. Typically I play horrible with variable credits. I have yet to find a setup that works well for me. It was sort of fun in that the Americas had joined up, Africa and Asia had joined, and Russia and I last. I set up to hit Russia with everything and told him I was going to try and "join" Asia/Africa and the Americas to get unit positions and then come back. He seemed to think that was a good idea so off I went.

I set up simultaneous "request to join..." for both red and green hoping they would answer yes close enough to each other to join one then the other seconds later. Thus I would know where every unit was. Green (Asia/Africa) let me in, but someone from red voted no. I tried once more and was denied. I went back to blue (Russia) hoping to join red (Americas) still perhaps a little later. I was denied again.

Had to change my plans after that and started marking every unit in the green territories on the white board for Russia. For some strange reason, Asia thought it was a dirty trick to join just to gain unit positions. :) It didn't pay off because Russia was caught up fighting Asia almost the entire game and was beaten by ROFLamingo. The Americas were relatively untouched at the end of the game as I had focused on Africa and the commie fight that kept ROFLamingo and Splatterer busy. We waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited some more. Neither American territory had fired a single silo at this point and I was somewhere in the top three with 90% of my silos payload. The other three had spent quiet a bit of theirs so I figured I would get the brunt of an American attack. We waited some more and finally I got bored and opened up all of my silos against N. America.

Moments later I had to help fend off Asia bombers in western Russia. Once my silos were empty I braced for the onslaught with 6 or 8 subs in the Atlantic ready to pounce on the eastern seaboard of the USA. His silos opened up, my subs surfaced, and then they disappeared. I only took joy in the fact that soon the game would end (after about 2 agonizing hours) and I could try again. Somehow S. America placed 3rd due to 16m collateral. I'm not sure how that happened.

Heh, the very next game along comes ROFLamingo still chastising me for joining his alliance under false pretenses. I explain that I never said I would be committed and not backstab and assured him (privately) that this time I would not backstab. Well it wasn't long before I spot Asian bombers heading for Russia and knew what was about to happen. ROFLamingo was being sneaky this time, but it cost him the game. The moment I noticed those bombers, I raised my subs, still close to my northern coast, and assigned as many bombers as I could Russian targets. Just moments before the first nuke landed, I left my alliance with Russia and watched with joy the points rack up. :)

I will say that this was my first clash with countersmurf and he's now alongside caranthir.pkk as a player that I must defeat someday. He played some very good games.

This next game was blast even though I didn't place too well. We all must have switched alliances 5 or 6 times during the game, bombing a territory then quickly joining that territory and hitting someone else. It was a diplomacy game and Europe was first in line for a beating. He took a heavy hit early and ended up at the bottom. I think that eventually gave him the win as we all focused elsewhere from then on. Somewhere in the latter half of the game, we all voted to kick S. America. At that moment 8 of my subs in two groups surfaced and reduced those cities in range to craters. I also had 4 subs for NY, but ROFLamingo found them when I wasn't looking and kindly removed them for me. Just seconds before the vote to kick S. America, I was about to backstab and raise all 12 subs against both Americas. :(

I kept eying Asia as he had two fleets (one full carrier and one full battleship group) just sitting in the Indian the whole game. I figured that he was just waiting for the right time to hit me and I was right. I was wrong in thinking I would survive his attack and was left with only a couple of silos. I fired off what I could and sat back the rest of the game hoping pick off enough of somebody else to propel them into last place.

There was another game with ROFLamingo (who tied with me at 63) and countersmurf (who won), but I didn't grab the right screenshot.

Edit: TillTheyGlow kept typing . every few moments claiming it prevents lag, or at least that's what I skimmed from the com. Thus the screen looked like:

Does this work?

I can't imagine it does. It would add more data, thus put more strain on the connection, so increase lag. It's not like the packets from the chat would look any different to the server than the packets from the game, so, it shouldn't cause any improvement. At least not that I can see.

Sounds like a superstition.

Heh! After reading the chat from that last screen I just noticed you and ROFL always end together in the score list. Even in games on other threads.

Pretty much. Don't let ROFL fool you, he's one hell of a player.
