EDIT:

I got to work on that  . It's not much, but I'd appreciate feedback. here it is:

im working on others, but thats the one ive finished

Actually, this: Image was one of the first ones posted... And, I like the idea, and have been working on a 128 x 128 pixel version, but I can't make the shading look right...

true enough, but the colors fit together on mine. the one youre showing has the weird border, plus theres no center.

My second icon(it was supposed to look like a button w/ key, but i forgot i was working at quad dimensions when i made this:

EDIT: Icon #3(for you types who will only play as the commies)

EDIT 2: Icon #4(world map suggestion, its crude but identifiable.)

Yeah, I can. (Okay, I use Boot Camp for most, but it's still on a Mac.)

Even better-Doom running on DOS running in Microsoft Virtual PC running in Windows XP on my MacBook...

Seriously. The lack of quality and ingenuity so far in this thread is scaring me.

Read the guidelines for the Tango Project to get some know-how on icon making. Although not entirely relevant to game icons, it has some very good points. Use vector graphics for scalability and above all, think outside the box to make something that will stand out.

Edit: Personally, I like this icon style:

Maybe a burning mushroom cloud in that style?

Or an ICBM launcher in the style of the Tron tank in the lower right corner here:

I like the current icon, the D. It's nice, and it reminds me of Uplink. Why would you want to change it?

Personally, I think a good icon could be a little Red Button with a D on it (I'm not on the beta, so don't know what the current one looks like) so I can feel like a general pressing "the Big Red button" whenever I want to wage war on someone. :)

Done a quick mock up so you can see how I mean, obviously the D would be in the same font as the actual Defcon logo as it were:

The shadowy depression needs a bit of work, but I think you get the idea. ;)

Ah, I like that. I was working on something similar, but it wasn't quite working.

Also, if I may offer a suggestion to everyone: why not work at 128x128? If done properly, it is easy enough to scale down, but not so easy to scale up (unless, of course, you are working with vector graphics). OS X supports large icons, as does Vista (and XP?). Why not take advantage of that?

How about the ones on here?

I imagine permission to use them would be easy to obtain (if I were the artist that made those, I'd be proud to have my work used in Defcon).

Edit: Also important to note that the .ico files the artist provides include 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, and 128x128 sizes in them. That should be good for Mac users :)

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but those symbols represent biological hazards, not nuclear hazards. They are not really appropriate.

In my opinion it fits the theme.

Doesn't Biohazard already use a icon similar to that? Wouldn't really want something too similar as it could lead to confusion.
