As I've said before, while indeed containing a few imperfections*, the 1v1 legacy ranking algorithm is generally very, very good. It captures, in its way, the inter-relationships between players. So, as in the case you have cited, an in-active player can actually move up in the standings if: some mix of players that they had previously lost to now lose themselves (or are aged down).

It's a little tricky to conceptualize, but these rankings rate you against not only other players, but against the pool of players that these other players have themselves played. Many ranking systems use similar algorithmic components (e.g. NCAA tournament selection criteria in the USA, where it is incorporated in a "rating percentage index" -- that also includes a "strength of schedule" component not possible in the rolling, dynamic environment of Defcon.) For avid ranking system designers and fans, the level (competitor's-competitor only or competitor's-competitor-competitor ...) and the specific weighting given to this aspect are always topics of ongoing debate.

This aspect of the legacy ranking system also explains a couple of other phenomena: 1) why some players with fewer games have standings that are so "sticky." Their few games are against players that might themselves have few games aginst players that themselves might have few games, and so on. In essence, the more games played, against more rated players, the more valid the ranking across the entire field (universe) of players. And 2), why you can win a large number of games against noobs (or, my pet peeve, experienced players with new IDs!) and advance not at all in the pool (these players are themselves untested against the wider player pool universe). And 3) theoretically at least (if you have little history of your own), a player could take a "quality loss" against a very highly rated player and actually move-up the the rankings!

In short, the legacy ranking system includes an aspect of rating player history against all active players in the entire player universe (not just those they have played directly).

These imperfections are more properly termed trade-offs in the algorithm design, and the designer (I can't recall who atm), deserves much credit for putting together a highly-functional system that reliably delivers, as it does, what the designer intended it to do.

yeah, that is correct! i`ve also said it before that i don`t want to miss the other rankings. they are very important to have a look around.
but there are also counted games with aliases and this falsify the ranks. remember, in tourney games it not allowed to use aliases or use aliases and at the end of the game rename.
:)
edit: i think it is not possible to make a fair ranking. last but not least because of the territories if there are only a few games played and trashing noobs with an alias.
for that, my ranking is more just for fun and for trying to get more lively into the forum and in game.
