I'm able to run a few of the early beta's due to the way the key on the main.dat was done, so I'm able to update my systeminfo file as required. :P

Wouldn't it be possible to put it in an emulation environment, such as WINE under linux or VMware? You could customize the hardware specs to trick it into running?

Emulation of the OS might work, but as noted, it would not be good for performance. Since everyone's Darwinia NDA has expired, you could pester them for the info required to obtain your early beta passwords and play the beta1/beta2's.

Nope. A good portion of Darwinia beta testers can't run their beta versions anymore, as they've upgraded hardware since then, or so I've been told by a few beta testers.
This is exactly true. I can't run any of the original betas or RC's. It's a shame... I like some of the older versions.

You miss the tanks, don't you?

Yes. There's a video somewhere of false and two others (I think it was wolflord and icepick) messing about with the multiplayer code. The level they made had some tanks on it, and they had a quick war which was ended when false's tank's fire hit the control tower in the center (there was an old bug that would make the explosion huge if it hit a building).

Nope, tanks just stayed as tanks. I'll dig around and see if I can find the video...
