Thinkin about playing this game
So, this must be the 4th time I'm thinking of playing this game, before I didn't even got trought the tutorial section, I dunno but somehow this game mechanics really put me off, however after watching some replays, and reading some stuff again I got attracted again, plus I think the theme and idea of the game is just brilliant.
Few questions tho, how many people are still playing? How much time will it take for an average person to learn this game good enough to play it competitevely?
And most of all, anyone prepared to teach a nob this game and play with him?
Also, you know some great, fairly new, or upcoming strategy games that I should check out?

Loads of people still play the game.
Not all of whom are regular contributors to this forum.
Quite a few such as myself are willing to go through a few basic training sessions with new chaps.
I'm nowhere near one of the best players but I can help you lose by a smaller margin that you might otherwise
Best way to learn I think is to get into some 2v2 games and partner up with a more experienced player who doesn't mind losing a few matches whilst you get up to speed.
Beware though. Some people take it very seriously.
To them Defon isn't a matter of life and death...
It's more important than that.

Dear Jordy...,
welcome to the worst IV community, again.
I could train you, though I do not belong to the elite. Just pm me. What is your GMT?
It looks like, you already know dedcon. Try to watch the recs with some selected players: (MOR), Nightwatch, Ace Rimmer, Senator, rus│Mike, Why?, LSWP, Mrmot, Edward, Eral, Mogwai.
A good source to get these recs are the tourney-threads in the forum. If you don't know the radar mod, then install it: http://dedcon.homelinux.net/mods/radar/radar-0.3.zip
This mod is from bert_the_turtle. Also a nifty mod is the TravelGrid mod created by Senator. http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon/viewtopic.php?t=6504&start=0
I also use this mod (bert again): http://dedcon.homelinux.net/mods/ringexplosion
There are still a lot of players, but to get a match started you often have to wait several minutes.
I also would recommend to join the ongoing 2vs2 tourney. Because, only under these conditions you can learn from the best.
Nobody is angry when you play bad. (We all do that from time to time, right Red Button?
) but if you are a total noob, then it will be difficult to play with you.
So try to acquire basic skills fast and then join. Most players will team up with you when you are cooperative.
How long will it take to learn this game? Honestly, I don't know. Some players are talented and needed only one tourney to play competitively. Others like me, will never beat (MOR).
You are a free man, but
- don't bug for speed
- don't quit (unless real life is urgently calling or your opponent(s) or partner(s) agreed)
Regards
Schub

What Schubdüse said is very helpful but just to make you a lazy one without any creativity from some sides..
Hey, it's the same when you wear what the others made for you as a style.. Today the moda said skinny I wear skinny, tomorrow they said slim I wear slim... So you will find your self as someone live his day basing on the others creativity and not his own. So learn just standard things about how to start, basics no more, and try to have your own style your own mode of play... And not to watch recordings and use to "Copy-Paste" mode.
Learn basics, give up Recordings, Strategic Air Command thread, and be one from "a Player who win and win and will never accept to lose. And another one lose and lose and accept each time to lose"
Also try to give up the idea "it's just a game, get a life". If you are good in a side you must be the same at the all sides, cause it's just a challenge between you and your self no more.

^^, thanks for all the support and answers, I appreciate it alot. As soon as I get this game I'll be sure to PM you guys that offered to maybe help me, thanks!
I live in GMT +1 I think, almost greenwich time.
I signed up for the beta, but I'll gonna buy it as soon as there is little stuff to distract me from learning this game. I'll probably need to invest some time before I really gonna enjoy this, but in the end I'll hope it's worth it, seeing this community is still going strong (for such an old indie title) and hopefully will have a long future.
