Defcon Wiki

Postby Ace Rimmer » Tue Jul 21, 2009 5:36 pm

So, this site has been around for a long time, but I've never ever ever ever ever used it. However, I think it might be a good place to keep track of information, especially the various seasons of the Ladder (which will be an ongoing thing. So, any thoughts on how this can/should/might be accomplished?

In short, I don't think it's a good idea for a bunch of us to willy nilly go editing information into. Rather, we need to formalize, organize, and utilize this website for the greater good. :D

I'm not sure if ladder history (players, screenshots, links to records, etc) can be integrated into it, but you never know. Also, if it turned out to be a good thing, perhaps the public dedcons could begin mentioning the wiki so others would join our little group. :?:

Edit: Or at least, perhaps we should have a true community run Defcon wiki?

doesn't that defeat the object of a wiki ?

A wiki is supposed to be accessible and make sense to anyone who might be interested; not just the existing defcon community.
I know there's a wink at the end of your comment but if someone or some group is going to take ownership of this then the objective should be to make this useful for the wider audience and not just the existing defcon community who at the end of the day already have this forum for anything defcon related.

What I mean by "just for our community.." is just our community who can edit pages.. But all can check it.

Like that we can avoid wrong posting.

I don't think they're be too much "wrong" posting, maybe vandalism, but not enough people around to have incorrect information while enough around to correct said errant strings of text.

Personally, I envisioned a true Wikipedia style Defcon Wiki, but I have neither the skills nor the time to learn to do it myself. However, I'd be a contributor, editor, and promoter, especially if it was a good quality site.

Wouldn't it be nice to see a wiki page on I-Beam bomber runs, Sfcon Seasons®, BOR, the Feud formation, and maybe even The Star of India? There's all kinds of things that could be listed that would be helpful to new and current players.

"How much distance do I need to aerial nuke a bomber?"
"Can fighters shoot down nukes?!?"
"But I thought I saw it happen!"
"How do I get this dedcon recording to play?!"
"Where did these strange characters come from?!"
"Where can I find that awesome guide that somebody posted a while ago?!"

Edit: Perhaps IV could have someone create a proper site, link to/from the forums/main page? This could be done with each of the games, but I only care about Defcon (and Subversion, probably). We have a large enough community to create the pages.

Double post and that's not your business..

Alright, let's start serious things. Simply we can have our own Wiki with our own domaine name, our hosting...

So for we realize that we need a Team work, each one can do something..

Per example I can help by setuping the Wiki, hosting, domain name... Ace Rimmer can help by posting, editing... mvpe can help by some videos... Senator by it's theoretic... Russian Mike can help just by keep walking away.

And there is so many Members have skills on so many domains. So we need who can creat a skin of our Wiki, a logo...

And like that we can realize something personal for our community and for the others.

Would this be permanent? Personally, I think the best option would be to petition IV for a site, first. If that doesn't work, then the community hosting route is the only other option. The only reason I say this is because I'd hate to work on it only to have it come down one day (like sfcon) for <insert reason here>. Of course, IV itself could collapse, but less likely than a personal site. :?:

Try IV? lol But worth a try i guess.

However, i dont see the need for a wikistyle project. There number of potential topics is limited IMO. And some of the work is already done and is posted here in the Strategic Section (or at least linked).

There is, of course, the Dedcon wiki you're free to abuse. It's just Trac and not MediaWiki and doesn't allow anonymous edits (I think I set it up that way), but it's there.

I can think about alot of topics that are not already covered by forum articles. But i would start a wiki project by copying the good ones anyway.
The avantage i see, would be some easier accessibility by a index and categories instead of a plain search, which always implies you already have words to describe what you are looking for.

And then i think iradiate made a good point, using that existing wiki, is a chance to get people outsight of usual ways to have a look at defcon. But then this wiki looks clustered and unnavigatable like any other wiki out there, defeating my 1st point.
