Wouldn't the whole thing have to take place in a bunker, or at least very far away from the blast, in order for any drama to take place?
Watch the movie "The Day After" or "Threads". There can be quite a bit of drama for those outside the bunkers.

Not really, Africa is dependent on foreign shipments of food and medicine, not to mention economic aid. Were a nuclear war to hit millions in Africa would die from starvation and disease, not to mention a total collapse of the economies which would likely produce violent civil unrest and warfare.

Well, alright, heres what I was thinking... (thoughts and objections are okay)
Theres a family getting together for Christmas lunch. As soon as they sit down and begin to pray (heres where you may object) The radio they were listening to stops playing music for a news break... the world is in a nuclear war. The government tried to keep it a secret, because the prsesident thought our defenses would stop the raining nukes, and he didnt want the entire US in a panic. But the radio says that the nukes have gotten past the defense system, and people need to get prepared for this as soon as possible. The family has to seperate, half going into the hall, the other out back in my sisters playhouse (its going to be somebody sister). and anyways, they move furniture, get sand from the sandbox, and bricks fromk out back to stop the radiation if they survive the nuclear blasts. They get everything they need... walkie talkies, flashlights, rifles, flare guns, ect. Now this movie is basically going to sow people that a nuclear war is not a game. During the movie, a little girl gets seperated by her mom, theres emotional times, people of the family atempt suicide, and they are living through the terors of war.
So thats the basic plot. So if you want to add in anything, delete anything, I'll take it into concsideration.

If they're attempting to shelter, they'd want to be at the very outskirts of a city, or a small town nearby - because the multi-megaton nukes that teh bad guys are dropping ain't going to be stopped by a few sandbags if you're inside the metropolitan area.

Off course the sandbags will stop them, didn't you ever read When the Wind Blows?

My 2 cents:
"Threads" (UK, Eighties) and "Dr. Strangelove - Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb" (US, Sixties) are by far more immersive and insightful, and (the latter, except for some perverts) entertaining than anything Hollywood or the like could produce... Imagine a Hollywood movie about nuclear war today - Love Stories, cheap stereotypes, heroes and, of course, the over-exaggerated importancy of U.S. foreign politics to save the world... sorry that hurts!
EDIT:
There's one thing I would love to see though: A good movie (how? Kubrick is dead!) of the Book "A Canticle for Leibovitz"

Agreed. That would be awesome. Have you seen Babylon 5? B5 was canceled before season 4, so they went into overdrive to finish the series. Then, at the end of season 4, the were renewed on a different network. So, they had to throw together a new season finale, because they series finale that they had already finish no longer made sense. They ended up producing several one act shorts, one of which was strongly influenced by A Canticle for Leibovitz. It was pretty well done.

Hm... should have a look at that, xander... I'm not an all-out (hehe) fan of B5, but i find it really interesting compared to the dull characters of Star Trek episodes. I'm gonna ask a friend for his Season 4 discs.

Im trying to make this movie as realistic as possible. If the government issued a nuclear war, and announced that their defeces cant stop the nukes shot off by a number different countries, its going to be a nation wide panic. Streets will be jam packed, stores will be looted out, places deserted, riots, violence... so the only reasonable place to stay is their home. I live in a small town anyways, Upland, and I'm kind of in the center. So if there was a nuclear war, I think I'd be safe from the booms. I seriously doubt id be safe from a fallout.

That's assuming they'd tell us it was coming. I mean, which would be worse (in the context of all out nuclear war)...
A. They let us know we have a few short minutes before total destruction of the <insert your home country here>, most everybody panics and lots of people die horribly scared while a minuscule percentage take advantage of the last few minutes and prepare/enjoy life peacefully...
B. They don't tell anybody and nukes start dropping on unsuspecting cities.

Both sound like they would make audiences grip thier seats so hard their hands cramp up. Which one do you think is better? I'd say B. I was also thinking later on, the president comes onto the radio and tells the nation that he is sorry for keeping this a secret, and If he told the nation sooner, there would be a lot less deaths. But Im thinking B.

I disagree that there'd be a lot less deaths with notice of impending nuclear disaster. People would panic, nobody would have time to really "survive" any place directly targeted, and those that weren't around direct targets probably wouldn't act very responsible.

True, now that I think about that, that would make sence.
