Defcon playerbase degenerated to Counter-strike level?

Well today I played my first game of defcon in a long long time. I used to play quite regularly when the game first launched with the EU (electronic-union) guys as my handle "The Wombat" or "(eu)The Wombat". Now I for one believe in non-team set games backstabbing is a perfectly acceptable strategy. If you want set teams then play a game mode with it... otherwise if backstabbing occurs in a game (which it likely will) then don't cry a river about it. Well in a game I played I did backstab one player towards the end and quite a few players became very abrasive and quite frankly very insulting. I didnt let this get to me because its only a video game I just felt such players should be held accountable for their actions and their words.
Without further delay, here are a few screenshots (in order of the conversation) that I took.
And yes I am a Marine as mentioned in the conversation. My MOS is 3531 motor vehicle operator. There was more to this conversation where they continue to rant about me being a stupid Marine etc etc clean up their toilet after they take a shit etc etc. Anyways I felt this bit of the conversation sums it up nicely.
I really hope these few players don't set an example of how all defcon players are nowadays because I'd really like a few games now and then if there is a community still going out there.
Thoughts?

Yes there are now more idiots playing defcon than there have ever been, especially since retail copies hit the shelves. Backstabing is part of the game and there is no point responding to anyone who takes offence to it, you won't get anywhere with them.
If however you do respond, mentioning that you are a marine and just waiting for people to bag out the marines is not very smart, they could have insulted you a lot worse.

I'll let them flame all they want. Silly kiddies in highschool thinking they are badasses cause mommy pays for their emo jeans.

It's amazing how this game can make a person quite emotional, no matter what their age. I backstabbed someone last night, and at the end of the game they said, "gg all, except Blackeard". It made me smile, because I knew the stab was the last thing they had expected, and it really must've made them feel betrayed
(I can still get upset myself, but usually if I'm playing a game without the right frame of mind, or someone does something specifically to ruin my game - then I just go silent for a while ...and become an extremely mean player myself

)

I get a warm glow inside when the stabee goes mental.

I remember well the first time I got backstabbed...
...must have been my 2nd or 3rd game, still didn't have a clue ("you still don't Domino!" everyone shouts

), and it was genocide...I was USA and allied with SA...just before DefCon1 I noticed all my ally's bombers heading for the East Coast...
"Wonder where they're going?" I thought...
...a few gazillion deaths later and my game was over...
At the time I thought well played ally and I'll no be letting that happen again in a hurry (well until the unofficial tournament and Radiant did much the same thing but that's another story...)
OMG I'm reminiscing about DefCon...

Hmm, maybe there needs to be another Unofficial Tournament (one that finishes)?
As far as the community, countersmurf already pointed out the source being the retail US release. That has somewhat faded but not entirely. There are plenty of decent players around. Oh yeah, welcome back! It's been a long time since I've seen any EU players.

I was planning on doing it but getting a new job got in the way

The community fluctuates as to it's level of maturity. It's usually best not to feed the trolls.

I blame too many MVPE clones.

Either mental or off their tits. Both reactions are very rewarding. I got called "loser" after winning a game by stabbing once. The 'stabee' clearly had no sense of irony.
