If you want to play against AI but have been downgraded to demo user, in theory, if you start Defcon without a net connection you should authenticate properly.

Theory no longer (for quite some time now) I can't connect to the server from work, but using my key from home can authenticate and play with the full version of the game, except I'm limited to AI of course. Although, generally speaking I mostly use it for testing as the AI is not significant challenge.
