Unofficial Tournament.
I've been thinking about this idea and toying about with it for a while, and I saw Ace stirring up interest in the community, so I thought it'd be a great idea to team up with him and produce a tournament for the masses.
We've been adapting it, and I think we have come to a pretty good conclusion.
------
What we have decided is to have 6 player games, depending on how many people sign up, and then a certain amount of players go through to the next round until the final. Ace also had the idea of linking the All-Star game and the tournament, which is a great idea, in that the winner of the tournament gets a guaranteed place in the All-Star game. This will among other things, give the other people another crack at the champ.
We intend to have a graphic representation of the tournament, and how far each person has got along it in this thread, which will be updated as required.
Matches will probably be observed by one of us, to verify results. The game can be hosted by the person with the best connection.
Times for games, we have had different ideas. We have come up with:
1-Decide all the match times in advance and just go with that.
2-Let the players decide when they are ready
3-Have 2 ladders which link to each other for the final, for timezone x and timezone y.
I think it should be down to you all to decide really.
I expect interest in this to be quite high, and the level of play to be high. As in single matches it doesn't matter if you lose, where as in a tournament, you have to play your best every match, otherwise you go out. Also you get bragging rights if you win.
If this is succesful, we may have semi-regular tournaments every 2-3 months perhaps. And there is the chance of, after 6 games or 6 different champs have arose, then they could be thrown into a uber match up.
You can sign up in this thread, choose which timing option you prefer and ask questions which either I or Ace will answer.
EDIT - The winner of the tournament will recieve: http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon/viewtopic.php?t=4075

Tournament mode will be tournament settings preferably, depending on the hosts connection. If it isn't capable of supporting 10 players, then we move to default with all the same settings, but reduce the spec limit from 10 to a more reasonable amount.
Settings:
Defection enabled.
25 cities per territory.
100 population per territory.
Random territories.
Victory trigger 20
Victory timer 45
Spec channel private.
Slowest speed realtime.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tournament setup.
This is how the matches will be set up.
Stage 1 - 6 groups of 6 players. Bottom 3 players from each game will be eliminated permanently.
Stage 2 - Based on your position in each of the games, you will go into the next round in a certain game.
e.g. If you come first in game 6, you enter game 3 in round 2.
If you come 3rd in game 4, you enter game 2 in round 2.
Stage 3 - From the 3 games, the bottom 3 will be eliminated, again permanently.
Stage 4 - There will be 3 games, with 3 players in each. Again the game you are entered into will depend on how you did in the previous match. The bottom 2 players are eliminated, so only 1 progresses.
Stage 5 - The 3 players go into the final. The final is comprised of 3 legs. One default (100m), one genocide (100m), and one diplomacy (200m).
The winner is decided after the 3 matches, as your score from the genocide and default games are added together, and then the amount of civilians lost in the diplomacy survivor game is subtracted and the winner is decided.

Damn you, I was going to try to organise something like this some time soon. The only difference being that it would be using the 1.4 beta clients. It was to try to encourage some more intensive testing. I was just waiting till the mac users all got given codes, since only afew of us already had them. I still think it's be better to use the 1.4 client, since that way linux and mac users can join in with much less hassle. The only big issue I see is the only having 11 units bug, but, if they fix that then I think it's be best to use it.
If you do decide to use 1.4, then I'm in, otherwise, I guess I'll sit this one out.
For the form of the tournament, I liked the form of the Beta Tourny. The only criticism is that if we have any rounds with only three players (which I guess will depend on how the numbers work out), then only one person from each round should go through, since otherwise the two weaker players seemed to ally and beat up the stronger one. I also think that not only should the three winners go to another round, we should have a "plate" for the losers of at least the first round, so that they get a decent amount of play as well.
I'm sure there were more ideas thrown around in the tournament forum, but, since I don't seem to have access to it any more, I don't know. (We were cut off when a couple of us started talking about starting an unofficial tourny. I'm not sure whether it was to do with that, or, if they just decided that we didn't need access any more. Hopefully the latter, since, otherwise I'd be disappointed in IV). Can anyone else who was a beta or beta-demo remember anything?

So, do you not want me to sign up?
I'm pretty certain he meant that as a welcome greeting.
I hope so, but since I'm terrible at picking up on such things, I figured that I would ask.

No, I really do. I'm sorry if I came over as insincere, I know you will contribute to this tournament and I was waiting for you, among a few others to sign up.
