Odd CPU Behavior... What the crap is up with this?

Postby hobophobe » Tue Jan 23, 2007 6:21 pm

I think the screenshots speak quite well for themselves but here's a quick explanation anyways...

Game is 3 human vs 3 CPU. All three CPU's launched simultaneously with CPU Player 5 and CPU Player 3 as NA and SA launching everything in there silos at Bejing.

Honestly, what is up with that??

AI tactics are pretty predictable, they tend to go for an all out silo launch at a certain time

Yeah, that is true but everything at just one city? And both of them no less. That's 120 nukes, I should have been completely decimated.

edit: Just to clarify, (didn't think it would be necassary) there is nothing unusual about a simultaneous CPU launch.

Yeah, but they targetted only one city. I don't think I have ever seen that before. Maybe they just don't like Bejing?

There are no longer 9 million bicycles in Beijing.

I must admit, that's an interesting tactical choice by the CPU.

I think I once spectated a game where an AI player nuked itself.

It seemed like it, it was just one nuke though. I didn't see it launch, but the arc came from africa and ended in africa (the CPU player)

Are you sure that the arc didn't start off the coast of South Africa? Like, from a sub?

It was long ago (one of the first days the game came out), so I don't correctly remember (ence, the "I think" in my first post). If I do remember correctly however, the nuke was the same colour as the player and it was launched from a silo near south africa. I don't even know if it targetted anything or if it hit an empty spot, but I think it was the latter.

It might have been a sub, but as far as I remember it wasn't.

CPU's can backstab, that I'm sure (or at least they could). I always thought it had been the AI taking the backstab a bit too far.

He may just be telling the truth, similar things have happened to me personally.

At some point during the battle, one of my silos switched to ICBM mode and started launching at my ships. I noticed this and switched it back to air defense after three nukes had already launched, all directly at my fleet.

At the same time this was happening, my SA ally launched a volley at Africa. His nukes also developed minds of their own with one in particular detonating somewhere around the South Pole.

At first I thought this was a case of a sneaky host turning team switching on but if it was, I wasn't able to switch teams. So I have no idea.

I didn't take any screenshots but it's not like they would really prove or add anything anyways. Anyone had any similar experiences?

To this date that is the only time anything like that has ever happened to me or anyone else in any games I've played and I play an average of about a game a day. I made that post right after the game in question.

I've personally found that CPU Asia tends to hurl a large majority of it's silo nukes at Houston. My friend loves to play US VS CPU Asia and I watch from time to time, and 9/10, Asia will send well over half of its nukes at Houston.

It's clear whats happing people, the AI is starting to think for itself, just like WOPR.

First Bejing, next the world!

Luring you into a false sense of security. The first time you don't bother to defend properly and BAM, you're outta there!.
