How does beta tester selection work?

Postby Bateman » Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:33 pm

I'm sure the majority of the people who frequent these boards would like to beta test defcon should the opportunity arise.

I'm just curious as to how IV have run their beta programs in the past, do you register your interest and IV then pick the testers at random?

Or is there some other selection process that is used?

For Darwinia, IV had a webform that you would fill out to (1) express your interest and (2) describe your hardware. Selection was done to provide a wide range of hardware to test upon. I would imagine that Defcon will be similar, though it is impossible to say until IV announces that beta testing is open.

According to Icepick, IV has already selected the beta testers, WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE! (besides the selectees).
So, if no one's told you you're a beta tester, you're not.

Hmm, well that seems to contradict the first reply. If IV randomly picked forum members as beta testers, it would seem that peoples hardware is not a factor in their choice.

Then again, I suppose that even if there was a form to register interest, IV would end up picking from the entire forum community anyway as I can't see anyone sitting back and not registering an interest in beta testing.

Ah well, I guess I will just wait until the official announcement in April. Hope the release isn't delayed too much..

Well, uh, I COULD have misunderstood it all... As I tend to do that sometimes...
But I'm pretty sure I got it right.

If anyone knows I'm wrong, do correct me >_>

That's unlike IV to not tell us, but, it's up to them.

iv do as they please i guess. but i dont see why they would have a private beta as they would get a wider range of hardware otherwise

In terms of a private beta, it is possible for them to re-use the hardware survey they did for Darwinia when those betas went out.

indeed, but they wanted 100 betas for darwinia patches so they should want the same for Defcon betas - therefore all 100 testers who were selected should be selected again. Unless of course they are confident it will work on any hardware setup so they picked a lot less testers.

Don't assume the devs require the same variety of hardware or the number of testers as for Darwinia.

Don't forget one of the advantages to Introversion of doing a game like defcon is that its much less complex from a development point of view (vs Darwinia). Less code, less complexity, less testing/testers.

Don't get me wrong, thats not to say the GAMEPLAY isn't complex, just development/coding side of things.

With Darwinia would have required just as much playtesting to ensure that the scripted stuff worked (balance issues, fun factor, are these levels doable?) add to this technical testing (crashes, hardware issues, etc), you have a hell of a lot more testing to do.

Defcon (presumably) due to the kind of game can have a totally different approach to testing.

IV is never going to pick me for a beta.
