Idea to help reduce server shutdowns

Postby MrBunsy » Thu Nov 09, 2006 8:03 pm

Taking a leaf out of Red Orchestra's books, with their Team Tanker tag, I wondered if something similar could be done for Defcon.

The idea is, if you want to run a server that is correctly set up with ports forwarded, firewalls working etc etc and you promise not to shut it down mid game, and will leave it running for a while afterwards to allow people to finish discussing the game, you stick a tag in the Servers name. It will take a while to work, since not everyone playing Defcon reads these forums, but a significant number do, and it's very easy to have a good chat whilst playing Defcon, so it could spread through the magority of the community reasonably quickly. There could be the problem of people deliberatly decieving people by sticking the tag in the server name and then shutting it down, but I feel this is quite unlikely to happen. In RO the [TT] tag has been incredably successful, and I've not come across any reports of anyone abusing it.

What do you think? And has anyone got any good ideas for a quick snazzy tag?

TG would be a good tag thogh they might kill me for puting it here. What it means is tactical gamer which is most likey the only tag i would ever use.

This could easly be abused but i doubt that will happen good idea.

Sounds like a good idea but what about using a tag like: [NS]? No Shutdown.

Sounds like a great idea to me :D

It's unbelievably annoying having the server shut down mid way through a game.

Personally I doubt it will work after the majority of the Defcon populace figures out what it means, as who is actually going to admit that they will shut the server down? They won't get anyone in their games.

It will work at first, but once the majority understand..

I've had a good idea. There should be an option to irreversibly become a spectator and let the AI take over your role. This way you wouldn't have to be involved, wouldn't mess up the game for other people, and wouldn't have to be bored, unable to see what's going on in the game.

I say go ahead and try. Use it until it's abused. Once it's abused quit. If it works, great. If not, oh well.

I quite like that one, it could double up to mean a few other things too.

I'm still of the opinion it's unlikely to be abused, most of the people who shut down servers give the impression of not following the forums and not caring enough to deliberatly go out of their way deceive people. But, we'll wait and see.

A bit unfortunately, it could be this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazism

What about using [ND] for No Disco[nnect] from this thread? http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon ... 3947#33947

I think that it should be [BG], because, as I said in the other thread, the person running the server promises that it'll be "ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive, stayin' alive". It also plays on the "disco" theme.

Hmm, damned Nazi's ruining perfectly good symbols... oh well. I had 'no ****' and 'nice server' in mind.

How about [GS]? Good Service, Good Server?
