SPEED UP OR SLOW IT DOWN

There seems to be two camps within DEFCON, those who like it Fast and fun and those who like it Slow and manageable.

I think 5X is a good balance between the two...

Personally i like to stick up to x10 if nothing is happening then slow it down again when there is some action or when i need to target stuff, x5 i find a good level to micro manage any slower than that and i may aswell have it paused.

i think they should in the next update give the host the option of selecting playing speeds, so for example the host can just select realtime and x10 as the available playing speeds or realtime and x5. So when a player joins the room they can decide to join or not and not moan when people want to speed it up

x5 if I have nothing to do.

I tend to play the game at 5x unless I have something to do. Most games take me between 60 and 90 minutes, with 2-3 hours on the game clock. I suppose that means that I am playing at 1x more than anything else. However, the people that I play with seem fine with this, so life is good.

Surely the 5X and 10X options should be the other way around? I prefer to sit at 10X when I'm not doing anything, and organise things from 5X or 1X

I've been seeing two camps within the board, but they're not the two that Mobius mentioned.

There seems to be one camp that says "let the speed be whatever the person actually micromanaging an attack wants it to be" and another that says "I'm fine with playing at 1x when I need to micromanage, but I see no reason why anyone else should want to play that slow ever."

It's a dichotomy that's frankly a little disconcerting. I've only ever had one game where a player wanted the game left at 1x for the entire duration of Defcon1, and that was because he had gotten clobbered and walked away from his computer.

My gibber-jabbering aside, the actual distinction seems to be between people who are comfortable using all the various speed options at various points in the game, and those that want it FAST FAST FAST all the time, no matter what's happening or who's doing what.

I like 5x... sometimes I switch to 1x, pretend I'd be attacking but don't do anything important, then speed up to 5x again and watch some paranoia. As soon as he calms down, I start the launch

I havnt come accross anybody who joined a game wanting it fast all the time, as i said i prefere to have it fast when nothing is happening and i feel that alot of players are happy running at x5 or x10 when nothing is happening, most only slow things down to do there stuff but all of them speed it back up again when nothing is happening. but your not along with pissed of players who stick it at X1 and go and have a cry in the corner because someone attacked them first. i think there should be a ingame voting system that if the majority want to play faster then its put to a vote and the slowest player then has 20 seconds to respond before the speed is increased. speed is one of the more common topics on these forums and it should be looked at in future updates.

that dont make people paranoid that just pisses them off, because if they dont see the launch detected warning then theres nothing to get paranoid about. most of the time when a player has slowed the game down i assume hes gone to stick the kettle on, or that the player is having trouble trying to move his fleet around Madagascar.

You are just incredibly impatient. MoonHill hit the nail right on the head before, some people think it's ok for them to slow it down a bit, but heaven forbid if someone else actually needs to micromanage a bit?! :o
It really doesn't bother me if someone slows it down a bit, gives me a chance to check my email if I'm not doing anything important.

So where's this huge contingent of people who want it all slow all the time, as you suggest there is above?

I've personally run into many more people who don't seem to give a care about whether or not other players want to do something in 1x. All they see is "I'm not doing anything right now, therefor anyone who doesn't want to go fast should be kicked".

Speed is a big topic on this board, but you might want to actually read the various opinions on it.

Really? What's your in-game nick, btw? (*Takes notes, prepares bombers for a massive beam attack*)

I'm pretty adaptable to this whole speed issue but speed whiners are really annoying. What I like the most is to run the game at 5x most of the time and if micro is necessary then slow it down to realtime, all micromanagment doesn't need to be done at realtime though. If I see that most people run at 10x the I adapt and speed it up a bit, worst thing that could happen is that you get really good at playing it at 10x...no harm done. But there is also times when five out of the six people in the game like to go at 5x and there is one fool whining the whole time about speeding up, what I don't get is why this one person doesn't host a game of his own with minimum speed at 5x or 10x? Probably this person also join games named 'no quitters' and drops after 10 minutes because his subs were sunked. Ahhh.. the horror

In a 6 player game this is a terrible idea, since lets say 2 or 1 player(s) still has a large amount of nukes and everyone else is empty and fearing being blown to bits by a counter attack. It is in the interest of those “empty” players to vote x20 forcing the players with nukes to play poorly and hindering their ability to plan and launch successful strikes.
