Grrr

Postby parrot of doom » Sat Oct 07, 2006 8:40 pm

I've just got this game. I'm a big fan of Introversion, Darwinia was an excellent game as well. Thank god for Steam else I might never have heard of it.

Anyhow, I'm slowly getting better and today I was on a 6 man server, in 2nd place, just a couple of minutes left and plenty of nukes heading to my enemies to make pretty little explosions.

Then, whoever was hosting the game, and losing badly, disconnected the server.

How annoying is that? Its like Norah Batty walking in on the vinegar strokes ffs.

GRR!

I had a problem with that myself, then I decided to only play games that I host myself.

there needs to be a hosting relay system, where if a host quits, hosting goes to player two, etc.

And then player number two's firewall setting is pooched and the whole game is over.

Indeed. Given how often this has been suggested, I think we all agree on it :)

There should be dedicated servers.

Hmm. What if everybody only played games they hosted themselves? (Clue: there might not be many games.) I think a little trust is needed. Sure, it's damned annoying when that happens. It would be nice if people could have a kind of score next to their name that showed how many times they had disconnected. Of course, it would either have to come from the PC itself or, if you're using Steam, the login name - or they could remove the ability to change your name.

What's most annoying is when it's 3 or more players. If it's 1v1 you can take a disconnection as an admission of defeat, but if there are 2 or more left when the quitter leaves, the game has no resolution.

That said, not everyone likes to sit and watch the remaining players continue, particularly when you feel like they have actively targeted you in a supposed free for all, whether the feeling is real or imagined. Maybe there's a moral obligation that comes with hosting, but how many people would sit through another hour of gaming withno involvement, just to be polite? I'm not ure if there's a solution.

Not as useful for a game like DEFCON, which ends once the match is over.

Well, I just tough about it and maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea, let the server be setup with how long it should wait after a game has ended until starting a new game, and other than that let it work pretty much like a normal non dedicated server.

That way you could be pretty sure the host wouldnt disconect during the game etc. Well other then that there really isnt any reason for there to be a dedicated server.

Perhaps it wouldnt be that hard to mod the defcon client into a server, just some script to restart the game say 2 min after a game has ended and to put the host as a spectator.

Still I dont really think it will do any good to have dedicated servers for defcona anyway.

I actively targeted hosts today as an experiment.

They quit rather fast.

Same here

I don't get it, I just don't get it. They can at least double escape and go browse porn or eat dinner or something and let the game runs out by itself.

One guy bounced as soon as I hit his first radar with my first missle.

It was quite funny.

I think that the ability for any client to take over as host solves the problem just as well :)

It just happened twice in a row to me, both server hosts were gewtting worked and they just up and quit.

My first clue should have been that they both seemed content to talk about the human reproductive system non stop. I guess anyone who talks like a 13 year old, will probably act like a 13 year old.

Sigh.

I title all my games !Host Wont Quit! and I NEVER leave, even if I take a massive beating. Its fun to watch. I hate impatient asshats that either 1) quit as host or 2) quit as soon as they see they will loose. Grow up.
