SUGGESTION: Game as Screen Saver

Postby RexRhino » Sat Sep 30, 2006 8:39 pm

I really like watching the mode where the game plays itself. I think it would be cool if there was some functionality to use the game as a screen saver! Perhaps call the game executable with the proper command line settings or something?

First person to make a screen-saver mod for this...

I will allow them to bomb me at their own descretion with no defence...

and I will thank them

I was thinking this exact same thing! It would be a rolling demo that would be random each time. I was thinking that it would be even cooler if you could somehow make the rolling demo your backround or wallpaper. (although it would slow your computer down a bit, it would still be sweet)

Wow, that would quite possibly be the coolest screensaver ever. Definitely support this idea.

Awesome. The only screensaver worth paying for.

I'd love to see a screensaver of the spinning world behind the menu at the DEFCON startup. I'd also LOVE to see a screensaver from the DARWINIA intro animation... the glowing lines. Man, I love that.

Yeah, this was already suggested before release, although to my knowledge, no one has heard anything from Chris (or anyone at IV) about it, which is kind of a shame. I agree with vogelap on the globe and Darwinia intro. Both of those are probably very simple pieces of code, and if IV ever releases an Uplink-style DevCD, I'm sure someone will make some kind of saver. For the moment, though, I'm not sure it's very likely.

Actually, I believe I can have the game called such that it will enter a rolling demo mode using a simple script for ... key something or other...

Anyway, it would be easy enough to have it automated-ly start DEFCON and go to rolling demo with an exe I could have made form a script in a few minutes.

The problem with having a rolling demo as a screensaver would be that it hogs system resources. I guess the best way I can think of to do this is record several rolling demo games as movie files and somehow program those into a screensaver, rotating the games randomly.
