The original copy was locked away and it was only performed for the pope and his esteemed company. Legend also has it that Mozart heard it being performed and transcribed it from memory, becoming the first 'music pirate.'

Here is one copy that I found.

Here is another copy.

This is my favorite version.

There are several incarnations floating around, but the final one linked is my favorite due to the GRAVITAS involved and how it is stretched out, and the high C in that last one is quite eerie and adds to the overall emotion. If millions are dying, the only song that conveys the proper emotions is this one.

ooh thank you, those are nice.

There's Barber's Adagio for Strings, although for most strategy gamers that will be a crossed memory with the burning of Kharak in Homeworld.

Personally I'm going to plump for Sting's 'I hope the Russians love their children too' for the ultimate cold-war nuclear sentiment.

Found another one.

The main theme from Patriot Games (Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson, Sean Bean - from the Tom Clancy novel), composed by James Horner. Quite eerie, with beautiful irish (I think) singing. A perfect fit, in my opinion.

... It's probably no coïncidence that I'm suggesting music from Tom Clancy movies for this kind of game, though

A lot of Muse stuff would go quite well I think since it deals with this kind of subject matter...

Other than that I'm totally agreeing with What A Wonderful World. Love the song and nothing beats sweet, sweet irony.

Muse could be good.

Sigur Rós would be good, although possibly not the latest album as that's a bit more upbeat. Hjartað Hamast could go well, or Ný Batteri.

Hmm, I'll go out on a limb and guess that Sean Bean's character is either duplicitous or fatally flawed.

Sigur Ros would be good - including their more upbeat songs: the sort of childish detached nature would be appropriate, not so much as irony but as a counterpoint.

A classic, especially the extended video.
