In game music.

Postby Tookie » Sat Sep 23, 2006 7:22 am

What program will the music be using in its file folder? WMV? I would very much like to copy it and put it into My Hearts of Iron music folder. The music for Hearts of Iron gets pretty anoying after a while.

I've only heard very short clips of the music for Defcon and its somber undertones fit a slow paced strategy game very well.

I really enjoy the music that was created for it. Does anyone know how many tracks were created for Defcon?

If Defcon is anything like Darwinia, the sounds.dat file is actually a Rar archive containing all the in-game audio (including music) in Ogg Vorbirs format.

If thats the case I dont have a program to open ogg files. So I guess I can not use the music for both games. :(

Ogg Vorbis can be played in most modern media players.

It's also possible to convert audio from one format to another... this is often not a good idea, though, as formats such as Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and Windows Media are 'lossy', meaning that they drop some of the audio data in order to take less space. The frequency ranges of the data dropped varies from one format to another, so conversions of this nature will 'double-up' on the audible compression artifacts, further reducing the quality of the audio.

Don't fear the OGGs

For playing locally, try VLC player (www.videolan.org)

For playing on iPods etc, try Rockbox! (www.rockbox.org)

That is all...

From Chris himself, in the IGN interview:

"The music is made up of short segments which are mixed and filtered in real-time in response to major world variables - like the number of people dead, the number of people dying right now, the number of nukes in the air etc."

It's not gonna be something you can play externally, from the looks of it.

I'm quite glad to hear that - it always seemed a shame that the DW soundtrack CD didn't really offer much that wasn't already on your HD. Got it anyway, for those extra few seconds here and there :)

Perhaps we'll see people mixing their own tracks from the segments, or recording their stereo mix with Audacity or whatever?

(and to think people used to look at me stragely for recording my C64's loading tunes with an old microphone...)

Hmm, didn't quite consider that possibility; Would be a bit like when Trent Reznor released a few Nine Inch Nails tracks in Garageband format and invited fans to submit their own remixes.

Gravity Kills did that too, and Bjork released a whole load of remixes done by fans - not sure if we should really rate IV's composers up there though :)

It would be interesting to see if the small samples start cropping up as sound effects on Flash sites etc., there will be thousands of us doing our online banking then suddently getting cold sweats when the rolling advert for competitive mortgage rates sounds like 10,000,000 dead!

There aren't even any wma codecs available for AMD64 linux (last time I looked). I don't know about the licensing stuff though.
