If you buy it through steam, you merely use steam as a content delivery system to download it, you do not use valve's main servers to host or join games on, It will use the introversion metaserver (AFAIK)

agreed, hell, once defcon has downloaded and has been installed, you wont even need steam!
you should just be able to extract all the files out of the steam folder and put them somewhere else on your pc, its only official valve games (or specially licensed games) that use the steam servers for hosting and require steam to be running for online play.

I used to be quite a steam buff on the valve forums, I have a fair bit of knowledge about steam and how it works.
Regardless of what people say, Its a good system for anti-piracy, anti-cheat, hosting/joining games and keeping games up to date, but from what I heard, Introversion's metaserver will do all that with less CPU usage, so I bought the boxed one (also because I <3 boxes)

Is this vice versa? Like an IV playing against Steam?
