Defcon 2 -- What actions can be taken?

Postby Bamelin » Mon Sep 04, 2006 6:55 am

I've been reading the reviews and I'm unclear exactly what "more hostile and aggressive actions" means. At Defcon 2 how does the game change from Defcon 3?

Defcon2= no nukes, but conventional weapons (shooting down planes, torpedoing ships, etc)

He's asking what the difference is between the "basic hostile" actions and "more hostile" actions. If Defcon 2 allows conventional weapons, what does Defcon 3 allow?

According to most sources, there's no real difference between them. At all.

Except that one of them's closer to Defcon 1.

I opened this thread thinking the title meant "The sequel to Defcon - what can I do to make it come out sooner?"

Well, I don't really know why introversion isn't releasing more info about the game, its not like its a secret anymore, but thats their call not ours :) . No real difference between defcon 3 and 2 (appearently) although the ability of your subs to dive might be disabeled in defcon 3 (they might always be submerged I'm not really sure).

In real life, some submarines can launch from quite deep, but then again, some submarines have always had to come to near the surface (if not actually on it) in order to launch missiles.
That means I haven't been able to find that info in the PD, so I can't help you there :(

I thought the same Chittix - I was busy thinking "But IV don't do sequels..."

The reason is that a lot of Introversion's press coverage relies on exclusive 'First Looks' from magazines. If all the information is public domain, then the magazines might decide it's not worth running the article.

And r.e. submarines, PC Gamer says:
Stragegy is fundamentally about trade-offs, and Defcon is riddled with them. Nuclear submarines are invisible to radar but are revealed as soon as they fire. Other ships can detect them with sonar, but have to turn off their radar to do so, losing their view of other units. The subs themselves can detect and destroy other subs with sonar, but reveal themselves on radar when they do so. Ever click you make sacrifices some element of safety for an offensive edge, or vice-versa
