DEFCON Icon (part deux)

Postby Montyphy » Sat Sep 02, 2006 1:54 pm

Just a repost of the list from "DEFCON Icon" before it gets lost among the other posts. Also added a few more icons of my own.

For hi-res icons (like in Mac OS X) Monty's two-color globes are like gods among men. But for the 32x32 or 64x64 we usually contend with in Windows (any larger in Windows Vista, I find, is cumbersome), xyzyxx's single submission (which is currently the officially chosen icon in the current beta) is probably the best. For Linux, it's really not much different than Windows as far as desktop icon size goes, though desktop icons are less common.

Just my opinion on the matter.

^^ FTW!

I like the globes, but I don't think that they would scale well. Also, they are basically just circles, which would blend in with every other icon out there. This is a problem with xyzyxx's icon as well, much as I like that icon.n I just adore the big red button, it has a unique profile, and it scales well.

I prefere the big buttons with the Nuclear Hazard symbol on them. My personal favorites are Chittix' square and circle red buttons (with the appropriate symbols of course).

EDIT: although jUngle's second idea is quite good too (the Nuclear Hazard symbol with "DEFCON" written into it). Would be perfect as the official icon in my opinion.

Either my browser has them cached or its a problem on your end.

Its a 5, since there are 5 stages of alertness. Although a 1 would make more sense since thats when nukes fly.

I think xyzyxx' icon looks very good, as it's located on my desktop as for this moment of time. I must say, there are a few others up there I really like, but the big buttons etc will be scaled down so much that they have to be rendered all over again (with some AA) to make it nice again. All the detail will disappear and the missing pixels will make the thing ugly.

But I'll review all of 'em for fun.

Babylon5
...
Never mind

Chittix
They're cool, but look at my comment above on detail. If that can be solved, I think the left one on the second row would be best.

jUngle
Nice, but they're a little...home-made. Not that I can design very nice icons, but I don't think they'll look good with an official release.

Leonaken
First row...skip those.
The blue buttons are nice, and the 64x64 re-rendered with some AA-techniques would look perfect. If the button would be red, and the hazard-logo white. Because blue is more for anthrax-weapons.

martin
Cool. The large nuclear explosion would be good if you can scale it properly. But of course, the game itself is a little monotone. Something so detailed and coloured is a different style. The silo and sub are also very good. I'd prefer the silo.

Montyphy
Buttons: nice. I like the red one with white logo, without 3D-effects. Globes are too detailed to scale properly, but they're very nice.

RnSK
Now THAT one's nice. Perfect! I like it!

The_B
Look at the comment on Babylon5

TheSquire
3rd one's very good. Love 'em.

TheToyMaker
See The_B's comment.

xyzyxx
Difficult nickname, btw. Perfect one. No criticism whatsoever.

trickfred
Look a little like Montyphy's. See his comment.

Enough comments guys? Good. I'm gonna take a break now...
