It uses UDP. (This is also public information, so even if I was NDAd I'd be able to say - look at http://www.everybody-dies.com/support/ .)

Sure; copyright violation is a lesser offence than intentional destruction of data (or, at least, certainly should be; I don't know if it actually is any more.). As for EULAs, companies can't magically make laws not apply to them just because they say so. Dodgy patches are a different matter; if you...

Because that'd probably be illegal under the Computer Misuse Act 1990?

(I know you weren't being serious, but I thought I'd answer anyway.)

I can see what you're saying, but honestly, the human aspect is quite a major part of the gameplay experience. I could see people deciding that they don't like Defcon, when they possibly would like in multiplayer.

That's very strange, because I've played Defcon and other OpenGL games fine with 9xxx drivers on this 6600GT in Windows (me being in Windows is a rare thing, but I tried it just the other day).

Having both played online and offline, the human aspect really does add a lot to the experience. I can see some people potentially playing the leak against the CPU, and deciding it's boring, without having experienced multiplayer games.

I'm using a 6600GT now, and since I'm a Linux user, OpenGL is basically all I've got. I've played Uplink, Darwinia and Defcon just fine on it. Hell, I'm pretty sure that nVidia support OpenGL better than they do Direct3D. As Darksun said, make sure you have the latest (I recommend official, certifie...

Defcon uses OpenGL anyway; I believe there are a number of OpenGL->Glide wrappers. The question is whether the card could properly run it (I haven't the slightest clue; it could be lacking some functionality or something).

Note that the message essentially says, by my interpretation, "Use this version as a demo. If you like it and want to play online, buy it. If you keep trying to bypass this, we'll ban your IP, so don't try." I could be misreading it here, but it doesn't seem to be an overreaction to me.

The only Linux architecture that's likely to be supported is standard x86, perhaps with an additional AMD64 binary.

The binaries will be released to be used with the Windows CD, as was stated earlier in the topic.

Ugh, Cedega. *is not a fan* That aside, I don't think it is actually an unimplemented function. It could potentially be a bug in defcon that's only exposed with wine (I seem to remember hearing about something similar on the LinuxGames podcast (I hate that term), where running a game in Wine reliabl...

So then, that excludes even UK shops, where Uplink and Darwinia could both be found on release. Nitpick: Uplink had 2 revisions (CD-R, pressed CD in jewel case) before the DVD case version which was stocked in shops, and which was released about half a year after the first version. Relevant news po...

Buying the game on Steam allows you to download it from Steam, since Valve have the right to offer this game to you via their service, thus they can legally let you download it on any machine you want. The same is not true of any warez copies; the distributors there have not entered into a distribut...

Except a secure one time pad. Which I somewhat doubt Steam uses, of course, since that'd be impossible. (And it'd also probably be obvious when you'd got the right pad in the context of software anyway. Yeah, ignore this post.)
