Re: Let's play a game!

I wish that I had gills and could remain underwater for long periods of time without breathing. You grow gills AND receive the ability to remain underwater without breathing, making them functionally useless but still disfiguring you for life. Eventually, being shunned from society due to the freak...

Re: Let's play a game!

I wish humanity had a cheap and virtually endless source of energy. Wish granted, it's called "Sun". I wish Hollywood was more about artistry. Hollywood's output is now dominated by black and white silent films consisting of non sequiturs of inscrutable symbolism. --- I wish to be fluent ...

Re: Let's play a game!

Granted. Everyone subsequently graduates from all possible degrees, making none of them worth a thing. Pretty sure this would be an improvement over the current system. I wish I could own a F-22 and fly it Legitly. A law passes allowing you to do just that, and after accumulating a debt of several ...

Re: Let's play a game!

I wish I actually had one day all to myself for once. The entire population on the planet and all its creatures vanish one day except for you. Additionally this same event causes the Earth to become tidal locked. I wish I would never have to make another written test in my life and still be able to...

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

So, just out of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Thoughts: It's certainly better than the first one, being less meandering an a lot more tonally consistent. Is it as good as the LOTR movies? No. My major gripes with the movie are: The elf lady, which has a role that doesn't add anything particul...

Re: Battlefield 4

When Planetary Annihilation went into steam early access at 90$ a pop, it entered the top seller list . If people want to buy a game, they will buy it regardless of price, this is true of indies and AAA. What steam sales caused was a situation where people buy many more games than they usually would...

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

So, I was checking the details of the internet at my parents house and found out they're paying for 24 Mb ADSL

The actual speed we get there is about 4 Mb and is unstable as fuck.

I'm not happy.

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

Yeah, here they just give you a list of the courses you have to take, and the semester you're supposed to take them. You graduate once you pass all of them. On the master, you pick a "branch" that also has a number of preset courses following a similar structure, but they allow you to pick...

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

It's a rare course that allows space for students to go where they want to go with a subject and actually rewards proper critical engagement by reserving the highest marks for any indication of this. Actually, my comment is more along the lines that there are plenty or required courses that are irr...

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

In my experience, Universities do a poor job of preparing students for this. Right through to the final year many still want to be "taught stuff"; they want to know what they need to know and be told what they need to know so they can parrot it back. Personally, I can think of two likely ...

It's more through "educated guesses based on previous work" as opposed to randomly, but you're not far off.

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

And for what is worth, my previous jobs were in research, which is why I wanted out. It was still nowhere as bad as college. Doing what? and for whom? I was an intern for about a year in the national veterinary laboratory trying to develop ELISA tests for avian flu while working on my master thesis...

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

From an institutional point of view, a bachelor's degree is not about training a student to perform some other job in industry, or to fill their heads with knowledge. You're still required a degree to get a job in industry though, which is why the situation is bullshit. And for what is worth, my pr...

Re: Let's go.........RANDOM!

It could be argued that any student who expects anything else is being rather naive. College isn't a 9 to 5, and I wouldn't expect it to be treated as a 9 to 5. The problem isn't the amount of work, it's how it's handled. For what is worth, I've held actual jobs in the past, and I've never found th...
