Diplomacy is not obsolete! Its the most fantstic thing in the game to chat with other players and convice them to attack each other. I love to do that myself and when their both destroyed I get into the fight and score those easy points beacuse they have taken out each others defences.

Im not sure im understands you problem but i give it a shot.
1) Dont install 1.1 or 1.2
2) Tried a full reindstall? (Uninstall, Remove Defcon folder, Reinstall)
3) Tried to open ports in Firevall and/or router?

if you tried Xirts suggestion and it didnt work. 1) Have you installed any of the IV patches? If so delete them 2) Contact Steam 3) Download the standalone verision and use your Cd-Key there

Are you using the steam version, or the stand alone version? Although both can be used with a steam key, the steam keys seem to change every month or so, and the old ones are revoked. The version that you can run via steam is automatically given a new one, however this won't happen if you are using...

i think it has to do with how long you spend in realtime mode. my self as soon as the game starts i go realtime and deploy units,this should take no longer than 2 mins(depending on world size) as anymore than that and you start annoying people. as soon as ive deployed units ill set it to max speed ...
