USA has a habit of making the State capitals something other than what everyone thinks they are. Like everyone thinks Dallas is Texas's when it isn't. And Alaska's ain't Anchorage. Florida's isn't Miami. NY isn't NYC. Washington definitely isn't Washington DC. But then The Hague isn't Holland's. And...

How can you have 99% of your fleet left? In a normal game you start with 36 vessels. Losing one would leave you with 97.2% of your fleet, and the only way you can lose fewer than 1 is to lose none, which leave 100%. But seriously, people dropping really is putting me off the online game. Yesterday m...

So if they choose USSR, you'll have the advantage if you go USA.
And if they choose USA, you'll have the advantage if you go USSR.

I get it.

Semi-interesting fact about San Francisco

Being a Brit and stuff, I would have assumed that San Francisco would be the 2nd largest city in California, after Los Angeles. But no. It's a lowly 4th in terms of population, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose. 5th is a place called Long Beach which probably doesn't exist. I only found all ...

I can't believe that no-one has mentioned "When the Wind Blows" - the Raymond Briggs (of Snowman fame) cartoon. One of the most depressing nuclear war movies ever - I'm always welling up by the end. It was mentioned, on the first page I think. But how come no one mentioned the Mad Max ser...

I swing both ways. But since we're talking about Defcon, it depends whether you're going for a team victory or whether you really care about your personal score. Sometimes I get more pleasure from destroying a particularly annoying (or just plain good) enemy with co-operation than I would actually w...

I don't know if these fit your criteria: There was an animated film version of Raymond Briggs's When the Wind Blows , and the novel Z for Zachariah was turned into a TV play by the BBC. WTWB is about a war actually happening, and ZFZ is more of a post-holocaust tale of intrigue. If we're allowed tha...

Defcon and Microsoft Word

After playing Defcon for an hourI decided to get back to work (we all have to). I was on a Microsoft Word Document. I instinctively tried to zoom in with the wheel on my mouse. And it worked! I was amazed! I tried it again. It didn't. Had I imagined it? After a little experimentation, I realised tha...

Perhaps it would be nice if there was an option in the advanced setup that allowed every player x minutes at x1 speed, based on whether you're voting for that speed or not. If someone else has it on x1, you can flick yours up to 5 and save a bit of your credit. There are some people who do slow it d...

... the only cities in the Middle East were Tehran and Cairo. I would love to nuke the hell out of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Chechnya. You have a very strange idea about where the Middle East covers ... or maybe it's not such a strange impression to have. I was showing ...

Inasmuch as it is only a game and the consequences of losing are insignificant, it's not worth getting too upset about a loss, and as GeneticFreak says, you'll never get better if you win all the time (... even though you probably don't need to). If everyone played like a clown, there would be no po...
