Formations aren't that useful. They move slowly, are vulnerable to flanking, and DGs in formations don't fire 'nades. The only advantage seems to be a slight increase in laser range (maybe?---I don't remember) and a faster rate of fire. They are okay for guarding radar exits, but not for much else....
