Darwinia+ deep and dirty Part 2

It has been a few weeks since the last entry on optimising Darwinia+ on the Xbox 360. Most of that time has been spent hunting down any possible areas to speed up the code base and basically shaving as many cycles as I can from the frame time in order to get above the threshold of 30 frames per seco...

I wonder how "grow and evolve" squares with Chris's lament regarding IV being "already too big and too slow to effectively compete," with new, succesful indies? Do you need to be careful what you evolve into? Well, look at it this way. You all know the story about how Chris secr...

...but not before Mark in his infinite curiosity had managed to deploy a few subs in key locations around the UK and was about to Nuke London (hey, he's a CEO - they are not renowned for smart thinking). Well, I suppose that explains the recent submarine collision. ;) xander Shhhh - keep that to yo...

I love Defcon on the PC (when the server is working hihi). The DS version does interest me, but how about an iPhone version? eh?eh? Okay, as long as you promise not to tell anyone... We made an iPhone version but unknown to us Apple have built into the iPhone SDK a kind of Apple only backdoor where...

Re: Premature optimisation might be bad, but so is pessimisa

Your example of the over-clever structures is a very good one. The biggest issue we have with modern C++ usage is what happens when virtual functions or even class layout are miss-used and how much of an impact it can have on performance. As an example, and I will be covering this in greater detail...

Re: Premature optimisation might be bad, but so is pessimisa

The real problem with premature optimisation is that you just don't know where your performance problems are going to be until you have some real working code. If you've thought about it and implemented the code avoiding the problems you've thought of, then by definition, the remaining problems are...

Darwinia+ deep and dirty Part I

My mother-in-law used to do something that really annoyed me. Okay, admittedly being a mother-in-law there were lots of things she did that annoyed me, but this one not only annoyed but really frustrated me at the same time. Whenever you went to into the kitchen the most commonly used items would al...

The Darwinia+ site is down temporarily

One of the perils of being a small company with limited funds is that when it comes to making things like websites we have to do it ourselves and one of the consequences of this is that it can all too easily go wrong. In an attempt to fix an issue with wordpress and url’s, we've managed to temporari...
