Well, I'm glad to say that having played my first few games, alliance play is very useful (as long as your ally isn't a gimpy CPU player). Well done Introversion for some great emergent gameplay!

I'm hoping the longer games will be more filled with alliance work. Sure, the 15 minute nuke-fests might not quite be long enough, but I would relish those 8-hour games for the fact that you could be talking forever. Ingame chat clients are great for this. The Y2K problem wasn't a problem because the panic itself ensured that proper precautions were taken. So, just because it didn't look like much, that doesn't mean it couldn't have had a larger effect if absolutely nothing had been done about it at all.
