I usually just use grant mods when I get to that point. I haven't seen any good scenario mods around yet, but I'm sure those will solve the lack of progression problem too, especially this early on in the alpha.

As a programmer (not for PA!) I noticed we get different trees when we plant them on grass or sand. does anyone know if these affect the industry in any way or are they just purely for aesthetics?

...but I like seeing all the contraband ever found.
It'll be nice to see contraband found within certain time periods though, maybe through a slider of some sort. that way, we can see how the prison's changed in terms of security over time.

oh that's what you meant. currently the execution room is non-functional and is just there for aesthetics. if you wanted, you could make a mod which replaces it with something else, but I think IV's making it so the execution room is optional for the people who want it.
