well fuck me, how does one start a game in story mode?

I have also been having this problem. It occurs in nearly every game I play, and for some reason seems to happen most often with office supplies (filing cabinet, chair, desk) and utility lines. The workers will consistently build a few of them but not the rest.

If worst comes to worst, you could install a windows partition via bootcamp and play the pc version. The mac version wouldn't run for me either, but I already had a windows 7 partition.

Not sure whether it's a malfunctioning intended feature or a bug, but twice now one of my workers has decided to pick up my generator or water pump and move it to some asinine location. I'm really having fun playing this, but I cant go fifteen minutes without something breaking the game
