If you buy Multiwinia through Steam, you already DO have all that friends functionality. You have to ask them for their steam name and make the friendship manually, but I think it does show you when they're in-game and such.

Plus, you earn all the groovy achievements.

I had one of my spawnpoints get the plague, and it was awful.

for the entire rest of the game they had the plague... poor little diseased guys.

Any strategy for managing/curing the plague?

I remember this happening to me when I was absorbed in Darwinia, too...
