Be more valuable in the alliance than out of it. Make sure all your moves are visibly supporting the alliance, even if they have another motive. Don't telegraph your intentions. Pay very close attention to any alliance units near you; particularly bombers over you when you're in a fight with a theor...

Risky perhaps, but I knew I would have to win the naval battle, so covering fire was very helpful, particularly to keep fighters at bay while my airbases launched bombers.

I don't think I'd do the same in a 6 player game, but for 1v1 across the Indian Ocean, it gave me the win.
