I don't know why you have those user and group ids but uplink doesn't need them to run properly. I would recommend changing the user and group ids to your username if you are the only user playing uplink or use a common group id if others do. Go to the uplink directory. chown -R username * chgrp -R ...

Yeah that's how I eventually found it. The problem is that if you run it in full screen mode, it crashes out without making that file even if you run it with +game_debugstart. I had to turn on windowed mode as well to get the debug log. Not really difficult, I just finally got the time today to sit ...

I found a bug in the startup script for uplink. It causes the game to try and start up, then immediately crashes back to the desktop. Ok after I did some basic debugging, I found the problem. The .dat files location aren't being included in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
