Ah my problem isn't caused by installing a beta, I just installed defcon and booted it up to find that Im now relegated to a demo version of the game.

It'd be nice to have an ETA on when I can play again though

its nice to know its not a one off, but still, it seems whoever has the power to fix the problem is being rather sluggish

I have no idea how to get my authentication key now I've just reinstalled steam and thought I'd have a quick blast on defcon, but it seems to have forgotten I bought the game D: I've gone on the website and it says I put my email in and they'll resend it, but I never bought it off the defcon website...

Collateral can also be incurred when an enemy nuke is shot down over a city (or a plane or bomber for that matter) usually doing 0.1million kills each time. And yes also the allies thing works i believe.
