This is caused by using alt+tab, or WIN+D, to switch from the Defcon game to the main Windows envrionment (To a web browser or IRC cleint, for example). To stop it happening, don't alt tab. EDIT-Spoke too soon. Whilst using the beta, the game crashed five minutes into a new game, whilst I was doing some "find and delete" missions.
